After four days of successful networking, enthralling music and insightful conferences, the seventh edition of Porto Musical, a WOMEX Special Project, finished up its 2015 event on Saturday, 7 February in Recife, Brazil - right before Carnival! The famous Recife and Olinda street carnival is over and the dust is only settling just now, but the impact of Porto Musical is already being felt with an estimated 860,000 BRL (270,000 EUR) worth of deals already made via the event's newly introduced business roundtable format. More than 500 representatives from the international music community took part in this year's edition, forging new relationships with their peers, exhibiting at the Porto Exibe Fair and witnessing performances from up-and-coming musical acts from Brazil, Argentina, Peru, UK and more.
Three Daycases (a new addition this year), held at Paço do Frevo museum and 18 nighttime Showcases, in Arsenal da Marinha Square, made up the musical offering of Porto Musical. The Showcases highlighted a broad range of genres and styles, with the nighttime acts drawing an average of 2,000 spectators per show. Browse the showcase acts here.
The event kicked off on Wednesday, 4 February with the introductory workshop, 'Music and Business'. 40 speakers and mentors from 18 countries hosted conference and round-table sessions, allowing delegates to delve into topics such as music in Brazil and using digital tools from Soundcloud to Twitter as well as receive tailored advice and tips from seasoned experts. Since the last editions of Porto Musical (already pioneering with the Go Digital! programmes) the digital world has grown to play a much bigger role in Brazilian music business.
Jody Gillett (UK), from Free Associates/Brazil Music Exchange, summed the Porto Musical experience as: "The best gateway into Brazil's independent scene, totally inspiring."
Take a look at the conference programme here.
An established music and technology convention as well as a crucial gateway to the Brazilian music market and other key markets in South America, Porto Musical has, in seven editions, become the go-to meeting point for music professionals from Brazil and abroad.
Porto Musical unites artists, record labels and tech representatives, music promoters and agents, festivals and cultural institutions as well as people interested and in tune with the latest music business trends and is produced by Fina Produçao, Astronave and WOMEX with the support of the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social, the State of Pernambuco and the City of Recife.
