The 7 Samurai
Once again WOMEX invited seven well-respected members of the WOMEX network to join the WOMEX Jury. As with every year, they represent a mixture of people and regions and musical tastes. The Jury - we like to call them the 7 Samurai - worked on the selection of the Showcase artists and consulted on the Conference sessions. Film proposals are independently juried by the IMZ International Music + Media Centre, Vienna. Sigtryggur Baldursson (Iceland) | | Sigtryggur Baldursson is a practising musician, producer and part owner of the label Smekkleysa (bad taste). As a former Sugarcubes alumni, he is very active in the music scene in Iceland, collaborating with many local artists as well as running his own projects Steintryggur and Parabola and calypso act Bogomil Font. He also sits on the board of the Iceland Music Export office and FTT, the icelandic music writers and lyricists association. www.smekkleysa.net www.steintryggur.com www.myspace.com/risatrommur | | Giuliana Cesarini (Italy/Spain) | | Born in Naples, she obtained a degree in Violin at the Conservatorio de Nápoles y Magisterio. She worked as a programmer for Italian Radio Televisione, also as author and musical advisor. She has collaborated on arranging programmes for various international festivals and is the founder of Neapolis Producciones, an international company for management, booking and cultural events. Currently she is participating in the study for the realization of the "Centro Nacional de las Musicas Populares" at INAEM (Instituto del Arte Escenica y de la Musica). www.neapolispro.com | | Cristina King Miranda (USA/Mexico) | | is a bicultural/bilingual arts leader, and music/dance curator and producer. Cristina is currently with the Festival de México en el Centro Histórico in Mexico City. She has developed and managed many international cross-cultural music, dance and theatre projects in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. She has worked with the Mexico, Gateway to the Americas Performing Arts Market, and was co-artistic director of performing arts and music for the Universal Forum of Cultures Monterrey 2007. She is on the boards of the Tambuco music ensemble, the North American World Music Coalition, RES ARTIS, and Fortaleza de la Mujer Maya. | | Tobias Maier (Germany) | | Tobias Maier is currently head of music at Radiomultikulti in Berlin, a world music and multilingual channel of German public broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB). He studied ethnomusicology and political science in Berlin before turning to music journalism in radio and print. Beyond administrating a 24-hours world music radio format, he runs a weekly radio-show, compiles albums, produces concerts and is part of the World Music Charts Europe production unit. www.multikulti.de | | Benjamin MiNiMuM (France) | | French song lyricist in the eighties, Benjamin MiNiMuM is nowadays the chief editor of the French world music Mondomix web magazine which celebrates its first decade this year. Since 2003 he has also been editor of the Mondomix bi-monthly print magazine. He also participates in the programming of various radio shows in France. www.mondomix.com | | DJ Ritu (India/UK) | | Co-founder of Outcaste Records and Rough Guides compiler and writer, DJ Ritu has toured in over 30 countries both as a solo DJ and with her groups Sister India and The Asian Equation. A WOMEX and WOMAD veteran having pioneered Asian music from Istanbul to Cape Town, she currently broadcasts for BBC radio presenting the culture-crossing show, 'A World In London'. www.djritu.com | | Maarten Rovers (Netherlands) | | Artistic manager at RASA in Utrecht, a leading institute for the promotion of traditional and contemporary world music in Europe. He is co-initiator of many international festivals and music consultant to the Holland Festival of Early Music, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Dutch Fund for Performing Arts. In the nineties he was European manager of the New York Knitting Factory agency and record label. Growing up with classical music, jazz and world music, Maarten has developed an eclectic musical taste, from deeply traditional to highly avant-garde. www.rasa.nl | | The WOMEX Jury was invented for the 5th WOMEX edition in 1999.
