Jury
The 7 Samurai
As every year, WOMEX invited seven well-respected members of the WOMEX network to join the WOMEX Jury. They always represent a mixture of people and regions and musical tastes. The Jury - we like to call them the 7 Samurai - is working on the selection of the Showcase artists and consulted on the Conference Sessions. Film proposals are independently juried by the IMZ International Music + Media Centre, Vienna. Jo Frost (UK) | | Jo Frost is editor of Songlines, one of the most widely read and respected publications on world music, based in the UK. Jo’s enthusiasm for music began while living in France where she worked for several years at Jazz à Vienne, one of Europe’s premier jazz festivals. She’s previously been a member of BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music jury panel and this year she’s overseeing the inaugural Songlines Music Awards. www.songlines.co.uk | | Peter Hvalkof (Denmark) | | For decades involved in Roskilde Festival: since mid-nineties member of booking committee with special focus on overseas music, roots music, etc. Involved in several side projects related to world music. Today also in charge of booking at Global CPH - the world music venue in Copenhagen. www.roskilde-festival.dk www.globalcph.dk | | Kristiina Ilmonen (Finland) | | As a Master of Music graduate, a former leader and a long time teacher of the Folk Music Department at the Sibelius Academy, Kristiina has been involved in numerous folk music oriented development and collaboration projects in Finland and internationally during the last two decades. She is a practising musician and composer, having a broad interest in ethnic musics, from historical styles to contemporary and avant-garde expression. She is currently preparing her Doctor of Music degree, playing winds and percussion. www.siba.fi | | Michael Orlove (USA) | | Michael joined the DCA in 1993 and has worked to transform the Chicago Cultural Center into a prime downtown venue for an eclectic array of music. He is the founder and producer of Chicago SummerDance and World Music Festival: Chicago and has been and an ongoing coordinator of music at Millennium Park since it opened in summer of 2004. A modern approach to record production is what he aims to take, to do this he has created a label that works with artists from the creative phase of a project to the artistic production, promotion, and live shows. he developed and managed many international cross-cultural music, he is artistic director of main Italian festivals. The list of artists with which has worked with is innumerable. www.ponderosa.it | | Dudu Sarr (Senegal/UK) | | Senegalese Dj/Promoter and tireless social entrepreneur and cultural campaigner who in 1989, moved to London to take up a language lecturer's post and to start the Afrotronic movement. He has a weekly residency at London's exclusive Momo's, plays at Cargo, the Notting Hill Arts Club and the Vibe Bar. He is co-founder of Aduna, the charity responsible for putting Damon Albarn, Fatboy Slim and Mylo at Fabric in aid of African musicians.
