Planes, Trains, Cars and Boats

Thessaloniki is easy to reach by all means of transport.

By Air

Your main airport destination is Thessaloniki Airport (International Airport ‘Makedonia’), SKG, which is well connected with many European cities, Athens and many of the Greek islands too. Affordable flights can be booked from various European destinations, as Thessaloniki is expanding its routes with Easyjet and Ryanair as well as with Turkish Airlines. The airport is located 14km from the city centre. Car hire services, coach and taxi services are all available at the airport. The bus 78, 78A and 78N, leaves the airport every half hour on working days and reaches the city centre in about 45 minutes. You can buy the ticket inside the bus. Taxis are always available in front of the airport and the price to the city centre is around 20 - 25 euros.

Alternatively, you can fly to Athens, Istanbul or some Balkan cities and travel to Thessaloniki by bus (see below for details). There are also frequent daily flights between Athens and Thessaloniki.

By Train

Thessaloniki is connected by train to Athens and other Greek cities. The rail connection to Athens is several times a day. The journey takes approximately 5 hours. Timetables and more information can be found on the web-site of the National Railway.

By Bus / Coach

The bus service in Thessaloniki offers multiple destinations with frequent departures throughout the day. Buses link Thessaloniki to Athens and other main towns in Greece, including all holiday spots on the Chalkidiki Peninsula. More information can be found at the Thessaloniki Bus Station. From the national bus terminal (T.S KTEL), you can reach the city centre (5 km) either by taxi or by urban bus (routes 08, 12, 31 and 78).

Bus tickets from Athens to Thessaloniki cost about 42 euros single and 65 euros return. The trip lasts around 6 - 7 hours. Information on the national buses timetable can also be found in the website of KTEL Attikis.

There are daily buses between Istanbul and Thessaloniki, run by private bus companies such as Crazy Holidays. The journey takes approximately 12 hours and costs around 45 euros one way. Simeonidis Tours runs buses between Thessaloniki and some Balkan cities. The bus schedule is subject to alterations. Please contact the bus companies for more accurate information.

By Boat

If you are interested in visiting Thessaloniki by boat, there are multiple connections from Italy. You can use ferry crossings between Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice to Igoumenitsa. For more information please check: Greek Ferries

From Igoumenitsa there are two buses running every day to Thessaloniki, at 09.30 and 13.30. Bus information

Public Transport in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki has a good public transport system that can be used to travel throughout the city centre and beyond the city limits. Getting around is possible by bus and taxi - both are inexpensive and easily available throughout the city. The name of the local public transport system is OASTH - for more information see Thessaloniki Bus Overview / Bus Map (pdf)

However, as Thessaloniki is a relatively small city with all its prime attractions within close proximity to each other, it can be easily explored on foot.

Taxis & Car Rental

Taxis are plentiful in the city. All taxis in Thessaloniki are licensed by the authorities and are equipped with meters. Taxis can be flagged down anywhere, however there are also specific Taxi Spots (list not complete). If the yellow "Taxi" light on the roof of the car is on, the taxi is available for hire. The cost of the taxi is approximately 4-6 euro for short distances.

If you are interested in renting a car, all major car rental companies have branches at the airport. Cars can also be rented from the downtown branches in Thessaloniki.

Bike Rental

Another way of getting around in Thessaloniki is by bike. 'Velib' Rent a Bike offers individual rental as well as group guided tours.
