As a final, fond farewell to Sevilla, this year's WOMEX Opening will bring the best of flamenco present and future. We're thrilled to announce that the great Miguel Poveda will be kicking off the evening. Poveda's won nearly every award there is in Spain and abroad, including Grammys and Spain's Premio Nacional de Música in interpretation from the Ministry of Culture. Be there and you'll see why. Sevilla's own Ultra High Flamenco opens the show. It's all rounded off by late-night DJing from Los Rumbers. Be there on Wednesday, 29 October, at the Teatro Lope de Vega.
[ D only ]: The Opening is for WOMEX delegates only.
A new musical project created by five renowned flamenco artists. Over the years these five friends, who all lead extremely active individual careers not only as flamenco musicians but also as record producers, have met and collaborated on innumerable world stages, touring with some of Spain's top flamenco masters, artists such as Vicente Amigo and Gerardo Núñez. UHF debuted at the 10th Helsinki Flamenco Festival in February, 2007, stunning audiences and critics alike with their unique fusion of Jerez rhythms, the percussive beats of Sanlucar, the double bass of a Basque, all set off by French violin. The group have recently launched their debut album, an innovative and exciting interpretation of flamenco palos. UHF shines most, however, on stage, where the artists come to life with great energy and ultra high-quality flamenco.

Miguel Poveda is today recognised as one of the great cantaors of flamenco's younger generation. Yet, contrary to the stereotypical image of the flamenco singer, he is neither from Andalusia nor of Gypsy blood. Born in Barcelona in 1973, he made his major breakthrough just 20 years later, winning four prizes at the 33rd Song Festival de las Minas de La Unión, launching a professional career that has seen him performing in some of the world's major concert halls, acting in films by Carlos Saura and Bigas Luna among others and collaborating with a number of international artists including flamenco giant Luis el Zambo, Portugal's fado diva Mariza and Pakistani qawwali singer Faiz Ali Faiz. In 2007 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Música for interpretation from the Ministry of Culture.

Mellifluous flamenco guitar underpinned by crunching break-beats, a vintage soul horn section riffing over looping flamenco foot-stomping and hand-clapping. It’s a funky fiesta. It’s duende on the dancefloor. It must be Los Rumbers. Since their explosive WOMEX debut in 2006, the DJ duo of Dr. Guassa and Pete LaMotta have been honing their skills over hundreds of gigs, filling floors from Europe to the USA and Mexico, refining their unique art of spontaneous mixing of jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop with flamenco and electronica. Now they’re back to open up WOMEX 08 with a fresh batch of flamenco re-edits and rumba mash-ups, forging the future from a proud past at the point where tradition and innovation meet.
