Networking Meetings & Presentations & Receptions
Get together...

WOMEX08 Networking Session

"WOMEX is the only chance I’ve got to meet my colleagues from my own country!"

We've heard it many times. Time at home is scarce and people are scattered. To help facilitate opportunities for these gatherings, we've set up WOMEX Networking Meetings where you control the agenda, you set the priorities.

From WOMEX Networking Meetings have grown numerous associations such as the Brazilian Independent Music Association (ABMI), the North American World Music Coalition etc. Now regions such as the Caribbean, Asian Pacific are taking advantage of the opportunity to sit down together to discuss local issues.

To arrange for a Networking Meeting or to book a Presentation or Reception at WOMEX, email to conference@womex.com.

DCAI

Launch of a new study programme, ‘The Global Music Master Study Programme’ (GLOMAS) will be presented by four Nordic music academies: the Norges Musikkhögskole in Oslo, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the Musikhögskolan in Malmö and the Royal Academy of Music in Århus.

The vision of GLOMAS is to create a top-level world music master programme, which will form a basis for doctoral studies both in research and artistic performance, bringing music academies closer to the multicultural reality.

Simultaneously partner institutions in Africa and Middle East have formed an international network for higher education in global music and related arts, named GLOMUS which also will be presented.

This session is part of the one-day seminar hosted by the Danish Center for Arts & Interculture www.dcai.dk

Freemuse Network Meeting

This network meeting invites all WOMEX participants who share the concern for artists' freedom of expression to join in and get updated about the global situation for musicians and composers. For 10 years Freemuse as the only international organisation that has advocated freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide.

www.freemuse.org is the world's largest database on music and censorship and Freemuse continues to lobby for visa issues.

Freemuse Executive Director, Marie Korpe and Programme Manager, Ole Reitov wish to "pick your brains" and exchange ideas.

How can the music industry take more responsibility and upgrade its profile on social responsibility? How can new projects be developed? How can we ensure sustainable funding for the work we do?

The Global Festival Network Coalition Meeting

The European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals www.efwmf.org is a network of over 40 festivals and friends that regularly meet. They exchange on artistic issues, festival related matters and try to work together to invite artists and projects to their festivals.

EFWMF would love to meet other festival networks, to get to know each other and since most of their members are European, players from other continents are especially welcome. This will be an informal presentation and exchange session for festivals and festival networks.
The EFWMF also has a stand at WOMEX for more information:info@efwmf.org

BBC Radio 3 presents World Routes Academy
with Duran, Lucy (UK), Parkin, James (UK) and Rammant, Hélène (Belgium, UK)

Radio 3 has played a major role in raising the profile of world music both in the UK and world-wide, both through its weekly world music programming and – more significantly – a 7-year run of its own world music Awards scheme – the Radio 3 Awards for World Music which culminated last year in possibly the highest profile event that could be extended to the winners, a whole concert at the BBC Proms.

BBC Radio 3 now aims to build on its relationship with world music artists through the launch of a mentoring scheme called the 'World Routes Academy' to be launched in 2010.

Radio 3 programmers James Parkin and Hélène Rammant together with World Routes presenter Lucy Duran reveal the aims and objectives of this new, exciting adventure, the World Routes Academy.

Discover the Spanish Music Industry with Sounds from Spain

Sounds from Spain Logo

Sounds from Spain will be attending WOMEX 09 as the Spanish national pavilion and will be organising this informal networking event.

Sounds from Spain was created with the purpose of supporting and fostering Spanish music internationally. This platform has therefore become crucial for Spanish music companies aiming to export and searching for a wider presence in international markets.

Music is one of the priority sectors for the different Spanish institutions and associations involved in Sounds from Spain and this session is aimed at giving exposure to new initiatives and business proposals from the Spanish companies attending WOMEX. In this informal event you will meet record labels, managers and booking agents, festival organisers, professional associations, institutions, etc. It seeks to foster new partnerships and deepen existing links between the Spanish Music industry and the rest of the world.

Come along and catch up with the latest trends in Asian Pacific music and the music business, and network with arts professionals. The meeting welcomes all WOMEXicans who come from the Asian Pacific area and of course all those who want to find out more about the Asian Pacific scene.

Saturday 12:15 – 13:15

The North American Networking Meeting

The North American World Music Coalition invites all WOMEX attendees to come join us for our annual meeting. This well attended session is a chance to network with colleagues and have an opportunity to discuss the issues that are on the minds of World Music professionals in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Saturday 13:30 – 14:30
Room 17
Emergency WOMEX Session on Tax and Visa Issues for U.S. World Music Presenters

Recent changes in tax immigration policies could have drastic effects on touring in the U.S. As the IRS becomes more aggressive about collecting tax deposits from presenters of international artists. Agents, managers, labels, and presenters have a vested interest in understanding the policy and what we all must do to stay on top of this change in procedure.
Furthermore, recent rulings have made the visa issue much more onerous on presenters who were previously able to collectively secure a single visa for international artists. The change requires each presenter to apply for a separate visa or for a level of bureaucracy which could cripple many tours.

Our collective action will be needed to lobby for changes in this federal policy. Please join us to share our collective knowledge and consider steps the field can take to address these recent changes.

Nordic World Music Promoters Networking Meeting

World Music Fair Copenhagen

Coordinated by [spillesteder dk], coalition of Danish music venues and World Music Fair Copenhagen

[spillesteder dk] and World Music Fair Copenhagen hosts a network meeting for Nordic world music promoters and invites the international world music community to attend. As Copenhagen will be the host country of WOMEX for the next few years, the aim of the meeting is to use this opportunity to strengthen the network of Nordic world music promoters, developing a Nordic touring route for roots and world music bands, in order to enrich their stages of these genres. The participants will select a handful of the bands from the official WOMEX showcases and specific offers will be made - who knows, there may even be contract proposals! In addition informal meetings will be organised, where colleagues from the international world music community are invited to present their activities.
