A Short History of Porto Musical

“Porto Musical has been created with such love and intelligence. Their work here in Recife has been an invaluable help in the development of the independent Brazilian music industry. We are especially proud to be partners.”

Gilberto Gil, Musician, Brazilian Minister of Culture

Porto Musical 2009 - A Review

"There was an energy and enthusiasm in the audience which you don't often find in conferences in Europe or North America. Not only was this refreshing for me but also encouraging for the music industry." Jonas Woost, Head of Music, Last.fm

The fourth edition of Porto Musical
held in Recife, Brazil from 17 - 20 June 2009 was a huge success: 440 delegates from 8 countries, 15 showcases and 27 conference sessions
around three key areas: Go Brazil!, Go International! and Go Digital! featuring Nelson Motta, Seymour Stein, Jonas Woost and André Midani (to name just a few) turned Recife in the Brazilian capital of music for a few days...

Melina Hickson, Director of Porto Musical

"Any gathering of music lovers and industry folk is always beneficial. Porto Musical was especially important because of it's focus on World Music, a genre all too often ignored by most people at major labels. World Music is so important, particularly during these hard times in our business and for the economy." Seymour Stein, Sire Records founder

A Short History of Porto Musical

This year Porto Musical took place
in the days just before the famed Festa São João*, the most important and exciting festival exclusive to the Northeast. The Festa São João, also known as the Festa Junina, is a cultural festival celebrating the the Brazilian northeast – its crafts, its food, its costumes and dances and, most importantly, its forró music. Parties erupt all over the region with many of the best in and around Recife and in Caruaru, which is easily accessed by public transportation. The Guinness Book of Records claims the Festa in Caruaru is the biggest in the world.

Porto Musical began as a three-way partnership among WOMEX, and Recife‘s PORTO DIGITAL and Astronave Iniciativas Culturais. For two years it offered advanced conferences helping to develop and support the independent sector of the Brazilian music industry and enhance its cultural exchange with the rest of the world. During the evenings artists from the region, from all Brazil and from around the world performed to packed crowds of professionals and an enthusiastic public in Recife’s picturesque Praça do Arsenal.

Said, Brazil’s national newspaper, Jornal do Brasil, PORTO MUSICAL “has as its objective the professionalising of Brazilian music. The themes of the conference sessions go from creative rights to digital themes, and include everything from labels to independent festivals in Brazil and abroad. They are veritable classes from those who make up the music industry... with producers, recording companies, musicians.”

For the second edition, PORTO MUSICAL invited Minister of Culture and legendary musician Gilberto Gil to attend. He was so excited that he brought his ministry on board for our third year. With additional partner, the ABMI (Brazilian Association of Independent Music), which saw its genesis at a WOMEX some years back, a new and bigger event was born: Feira Música Brasil. The new partners brought in a thriving trade and product fair, organised business meetings and added two new stages. PORTO MUSICAL ran the conferences and training sessions and was in charge of the international showcase programming.

“All the conferences were completely full,” enthused Feira producer Paula Porta, Coordinator of Prodec, the Economic Development Project for Culture within the Ministry. Ms. Porta went further to explain our scope and impact when the Feira was first announced. PORTO MUSICAL, “an event dedicated to the discussion about music, technology and markets, now in its third edition, joins the Fair and will offer 24 conferences by 38 lecturers, from Brazil and abroad. Aimed at the sector’s professionals [will be] subjects such as digital distribution, international markets, marketing strategies, product quality, radio and TV etc... It will also include a specialisation course on music authorial rights management...”

Added UNESCO’s Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity, “PORTO MUSICAL, a Brazilian music and technology convention, [teamed] up with Feira Música Brasil, a business-oriented music forum and trade fair, to become the largest music industry event in Brazil.” And big it was. Over 2,100 people attended, and the Feira reported business transactions in excess of 8.5 million US dollars.

In just a few short years, the PORTO MUSICAL Offspring grew from a small focused event for the development of an independent music industry into a major partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Culture.

Porto Musical is a co-production of AstroNave, Porto Digital and WOMEX.

Porto Musical is supported by BNDES, Brasil Governo Federal, Ministério da Cultura, Fundarpe, and the Governo de Pernambuco. Additional support provided by Abrafin, C.E.S.A.R., Porto Digital, Prefeitura de Recife, and the Secretaria de Ciência, Tecnologia e Meio Ambiente.

“WOMEX has offered an invaluable contribution to the establishment of Porto Musical as a leading music industry conference in Brazil, exposing it world-wide and adding a solid and respectable profile to such an event.”
Carlos de Andrade, President, ABMI – Associação Brasileira da Musica Indipendente/Brazilian Association of Independent Music
