Dear media colleagues,

Great news! Since mid-April our Berlin office has been drowning in WOMEX 08 programme proposals. The Accommodation Form is available online now, we are looking for WOMEX 08 photographers / WOMEX Guide essays... and much more. Read this newsletter carefully...

top Programme Proposals Received

We have received more than 600 Showcase proposals for WOMEX 08, about the same as last year. The Jury and we are currently spending all available time viewing the Electronic Press Kits on Sonicbids and listening to all the great music.

Around 60 Conference proposals with a broad range of interesting topics including also Mentor Sessions and Master Classes have reached us as well. We are looking forward to a very promising WOMEX 08 Conference progamme!

top Call for Proposals: WOMEX Guide Essays

We are looking for essays on different aspects of the music industry to be included in the WOMEX Guide 08. The writers of the selected essays will each receive one free WOMEX 08 registration.

Guidelines: Along with the usual variety of topics, WOMEX 08 will be taking a special look at each of the following. We would like to commission at least three essays from the follwing areas:

  • Collective Licensing
  • Collection Societies
  • (Digital) Contracts
  • WOMEX Think-Piece: You tell us what you think must be covered.
Be visionary, be controversial, be informative - just don't be boring!
How to propose: Write about 100 words describing your proposed essay and point of view. Please include writing samples in English (no more than two full articles, please).
Deadline for proposals: Friday, 23 May 2008, assignments will be awarded by Friday, 30 May, and all essays must be delivered by Friday, 13 June.

Please note: In the interest of attracting the broadest range of writers from all WOMEX delegate territories, we are happy to help edit articles by those who are not entirely confident in English. What we will need is a clear, cleanly argued essay in an easily readable form of English (We cannot translate, sorry). It doesn't have to be perfect by any means. We could then work with you to get it into a form of English that we can jointly approve. What is important is variety and diversity - not 100% fluency in English.

top Call for Proposals: WOMEX Photographers

We are inviting a new selection of four photographers for this year. To apply, please send a bio and direct us to your online gallery, so we can get a clear idea of your work and experience. Deadline: Send all proposals to media@womex.com by Friday, 30 May 2008 For full details on terms and requirements, please mailto: media@womex.com.

Have a look at the amazing WOMEX photos of last year's photographers:

top Five Tips on How to Break Through

We'd like to have your opinion: could you put together your personal five golden rules on how a newcomer artist can reach the media to break through in the world music business and send it to us at WOMEX? - mailto:media@womex.com. We'd also like to publish the best entries on the WOMEX website and perhaps even make this a WOMEX Guide feature (of course, we will ask for your permission beforehand).

top Book your Hotel Now

Our Sevillan travel & accommodation partner Viajes El Corte Inglés has put together a brochure in which you can find information about hotels in Sevilla. Once you have chosen your hotel, download the Accommodation Form (available now!), fill it out and fax it back to them (not to us!).

top Questionnaire Winner

A winner was drawn from over 500 WOMEX delegates who have answered the WOMEX 07 Questionnaire. The prize - one free registration for WOMEX 08 - went to Mamatal Ag Dahmane, Festival au Désert (Mali).

top World of Music Awards

The World of Music Awards from We Are Listening is your exclusive opportunity to get your music in front of music industry professionals for a chance to win an all-inclusive trip to WOMEX, the largest and most important world music fair of its kind. The contest winner will join world music expert, Dubi Lenz, and a host of other WOMEX delegates in Sevilla, Spain, for a weekend of networking, music promotion and career development. Now is the time to take part in the most culturally diverse music event in the world!

top Expo Guide Warning

We have heard from several WOMEX delegates that a new company based in Mexico is sending out misleading mailings under the name of Expo Guide - very similar to the Fair Guide mailings from Construct Data. As before, if you don't read the small print you might think it is from WOMEX. It is not: We are in no way affiliated. Only sign if you want to pay over 1000 euros per year to be listed in their guide. If you have been contacted by Construct Data (after 13 February 2007!) or Commercial Online Manuals S de RL de CV and have signed their Fair Guide / Expo Guide update offer because you thought it was sent by WOMEX, please let us know, mailto: media@womex.com.

Stay tuned and keep in touch!

Best regards from your WOMEX team
