Hundreds of 'Club Globalkan' Proposals Received
World Music and Wales at Hay Festival
Classical:NEXT Set to Begin
Dear Media Colleagues,
Another milestone in the preparations for this year's WOMEX 12 in Thessaloniki has been reached: applications for the first 'Club Globalkan' stage at WOMEX closed last week... and what an overwhelming response!
HUNDREDS OF CLUB GLOBALKAN PROPOSALS RECEIVED
Marking the first ever WOMEX edition in Southeastern Europe, the 'Club Globalkan' stage will be dedicated exclusively to Balkan music. When the call for proposals finally closed its doors on Friday, 18 May 2012, the number of proposals had reached almost 300. A huge thank you to all the artists who applied.
The 'Club Globalkan' stage is an initiative by WOMEX's local partners in Greece. It is supported by the Municipality of Thessaloniki and organised by Gaia Live. In recent weeks the team has been active in the Balkan area, informing local artists and media about the new initiative and encouraging them to apply. Press conferences were held in Istanbul, Bucharest and Belgrade.
The final selection for 'Club Globalkan' will be made by a jury and successful applicants will be notified in due course.
WORLD MUSIC AND WALES AT HAY FESTIVAL, 6 JUNE 2012
Audiences at the world renowned Hay Festival in Wales next month will receive a special taster of what to expect at WOMEX 13, which is taking place in Cardiff at the end of October next year.
On 6 June at 16:00, Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales and WOMEX 13 will present a performance by the ground-breaking 9Bach (offWOMEX Showcase act 2010) in The Sound Castle. The concert will preview new songs from 9Bach’s forthcoming second album.
In addition, a panel session at The Moot, on the main literary site at Hay on Wye at 11:30 on the day of the concert, will explore themes of cultural sustainability in world music and the experiences of 9Bach in Australia.
Martin Hoyland of 9 Bach states:
'We played WOMEX 2010 when it was in Copenhagen and it's been an incredible eighteen months since touring and collaborating in Australia on Mamiaith. We'll be sharing some of those experiences with the Hay audience and are looking forward to being part of WOMEX in Wales next year.'
Tickets for the event are free and can be reserved at: www.hayfestival.com
