More on Visa Issues
We'd like to highlight the ongoing Visa problems of world music artists,
one of which we reported in our last newsletter. As you'll remember,
last year we convoked a special emergency session at WOMEX to discuss
the issue, and this year we are planning a follow-up in the hopes that
the ongoing work of our colleagues will lead to concrete proposals and
actions. We'll be notifying you in the coming months of what this
session will entail and how you can help. Send us your visa stories and we'll publicize them on the website.
Konono Tour Still in the Works
Meanwhile, more on the ongoing saga of Konono, who suffered visa
problems in 2006 and had to cancel out of WOMEX at the last minute
(happily to appear successfully in WOMEX 2007). They actually have
diplomatic passports awarded by the Congolese Minstry of Culutre -- yet
they were still refused a Schengen visa at the French embassy. Two
shows were cancelled, one in London, the other in Porto. Now,
fortunately, the Swedish embassy is working on granting the visa so
that the tour can continue. Get updates at:
