WOMEX NEWSletter #7, 3 May 2012
Over the past few weeks the WOMEX Team has been drowning in a sea of envelopes, as proposals swamped the WOMEX office before the deadline closed on Friday, 13 April 2012. This is high season for spotting new talent...
This year, WOMEX received an exceptional response. A staggering 850 Showcase proposals were made - more than ever before in WOMEX history. In addition, WOMEX received over 86 Conference and 42 Film Screening proposals - both more than last year. WOMEX moving south was reflected in the high number of programme proposals submitted from the Balkan region. WOMEX would like to thank all the artists, music professionals and filmmakers who submitted a Showcase, Conference or Film Screening proposal for WOMEX 12.
The WOMEX Jury - also known as the 7 Samurai - are now working hard to shape the Showcase and Conference programmes from the abundance of high quality proposals. It is expected that the proposing parties will be notified whether they made it into the selection or not by early June.
The film proposals will be independently juried by IMZ International Music + Media Centre and will be revealed at the end of June.
Proposals for 'Club Globalkan' - an extra stage dedicated to Balkan music supported by the Municipality of Thessaloniki and organised by GAIA Live - are still being accepted until Friday, 18 May. Please find all further information at www.womex.com/lnk/how-to-propose#balkan
This year, WOMEX is launching a call for papers for the WOMEX 12 Guide essay. If you have an interesting idea for an essay, we want to hear from you!
High-quality papers (in English) covering all areas are welcome - in particular those that relate to one of the following major areas: the ongoing world & jazz focus at WOMEX, or insights into the musical traditions, history and state of the industry of the new Southeastern European host region.
Successful papers will be published in October in the prestigious WOMEX Guide - a vital source of information used all year round by the international world music industry, which is also available online as a pdf document.
If your paper is published, you will be given a free registration to WOMEX 12 in Thessaloniki from Wednesday, 17 to Sunday, 21 October 2012. You will also receive special promotional treatment through all WOMEX's online communication channels, including newsletter, homepage news and social media mentions.
The WOMEX Guide essay will be 2000-2200 words in length. To apply, please send a 500-word synopsis of your essay in English to email@example.com, plus links to other articles you may have written. Please include 'Guide essay' in the subject line. Deadline: Friday, 25 May 2012.
The final deadline for delivering the Guide essay will be Friday, 22 June 2012. We are looking forward to your participation.
The WOMEX week in October will be a busy one for hotels in Thessaloniki... we recommend that you book early!
To help you decide where to stay, our Greek partners have put together a list of hotels in Thessaloniki, as well as an online form which you can use to make your booking. The hotels are also marked on our handy map, which shows their proximity to the WOMEX venues.

The first successful event took place in Istanbul on Tuesday, 17 April, at Babylon Lounge in Istanbul and was attended by local and national media, as well as artists and music professionals across all sectors. The next press conference will be held on Friday, 4 May at 14:00 in the Museum of the Peasant, Bucharest.
Similar events in other cities in the region are planned during the next few weeks - stay tuned for more information.
