Preparations for the largest industry gathering of world music professionals are running incredibly smoothly and we are delighted to announce the first Showcase Festival acts performing at WOMEX 12, taking place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from Wednesday, 17 to Sunday, 21 October 2012. More announcements will be made over the coming weeks.
FIRST WOMEX 12 SHOWCASES CONFIRMED
The WOMEX Jury's task is always a tough one and this year has been no exception. The 5 Showcase Samurai spent hundreds of hours listening to the 850 Showcase proposals received (a record-breaker!) and discussing which ones to select for WOMEX 12.
Jury member Allie Silver (USA/Argentina) summarised the experience:
"I felt like I was at the world music Olympics debating Albanian polyphonic choirs at 4am trying to make the selection fit together while factoring in balance, musicianship and even risk."
A huge thank you to all the Samurai for their enthusiasm and dedication to the task at hand.

GREECE WARMING UP FOR WOMEX
Cuban artists are fuelling the heat in Greece ahead of the WOMEX experience this coming October. Tomorrow, Friday, 29 June, Ibrahim Ferrer Jr., the son of the Buena Vista Social Club singer, will be playing at Moni Lazariston - who will also be presenting their venue and activities at the WOMEX Trade Fair - in Thessaloniki as part of the first Cuba Festival, taking place in Athens and Thessaloniki from Thursday, 28 to Saturday, 30 June.

The current WOMEX 12 preparations in Thessaloniki are in full swing. Our local partners - Helexpo, Thessaloniki's congress and exhibition centre; Gaia Live, an established and well-versed concert promoter; the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Municipality of Thessaloniki - are going far above and beyond the call of duty to make the first edition in Southeastern Europe a resounding (and sustainable) success, despite challenging times. The mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, is considered one of the most fervent advocates of the Greek WOMEX undertaking and doesn't miss a single chance to promote the event both inside and outside the country. The huge number of showcase proposals from Greece and neighbouring countries alone bears witness to their common efforts. Our partners even won their President over: WOMEX shall take place under the auspices of H.E the President of the Hellenic Republic Dr. Karolos Papoulias.
We are looking forward to our next site visit to Thessaloniki in July and wanted to share with you the best spots to fill your stomachs and quench your thirst. When planning your trip, bear in mind that the WOMEX Trade Fair will kick off at Helexpo from 14:00 to 18:00 on Wednesday, 21 October, followed by a special Opening event at Megaro from 20:00 to 00:00. WOMEX 12 will close with a final farewell on Sunday, 21 October, at the Networking Breakfast from 10:00 to 12:00 and WOMEX Awards Ceremony from 12:00 to 14:00, both at Megaro. WOMEX ROADSHOW: 'WORLD OF SIBERIA' FESTIVAL, 12 - 15 JULY
