First Conference Topics & Speakers Confirmed

offWOMEX Programme Announcement: Minas Gerais Night (Brazil)

Crosspulse’s 5th International Body Music Festival (Ad)

Warning: Hotel Scam! In the past few weeks we've heard from several WOMEX delegates that they've been contacted by a company called BME Business Travel offering special hotel rates during WOMEX. Please note that we are not affiliated with them in any way. Please consider carefully to whom you give your credit card details!

Dear WOMEXicans,

August has arrived, bringing with it not only the summer holidays but also this year's earlier Guide Rate on Friday, 24 August - just 3 weeks away! More additions to the programme are being made every day and we also managed to squeeze in a Facebook chat last week to gather some valuable tips about Thessaloniki, which are summarised here: on.fb.me

FIRST CONFERENCE TOPICS & SPEAKERS CONFIRMED

WOMEX is delighted to announce the first WOMEX 12 Conference topics and speakers, who will be shedding light on the latest music industry developments and sparking debate across all sectors. A huge thank you goes to our brilliant Samurai, Nadia EL-Imam (Sweden) and Lemez Lovas (UK), who curated the compelling Conference programme.

This year's Conference has a particular emphasis on Southeastern Europe - WOMEX's new host region - with several Conference Sessions focusing on this theme:

Peter Xanthopoulos (Greece), Hellenic Society for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AEPI); Stefanos Loukakos (Greece), Google Greece; and Antonis Plessas (Greece), Composer/Producer, will explore the ever-changing music landscape facing Greek creators today and the opportunities offered by new digital media, such as Google Greece.

Revolutionary new research on Ottoman, Persian and Greek music will be discussed and unknown historical Ottoman music repertoire will be discovered in a session chaired by Dr. PD Martin Greve (Germany/Turkey), Orient-Institut Istanbul; with Dr. Kyriakos Kalaitzidis (Greece), Musicologist/Musician, En Chordais; and Kiya Tabassian (Iran/Canada), Musician, Constantinople.

With WOMEX moving east this year, it seems a good time to look at how world music festivals in Eastern Europe and the Balkans are faring. Chaired by Nick Hobbs (UK/Turkey), Charmenko; with Dejan Vujinovic (Serbia), Etnofest - World Culture Festival; and Csaba Lokös (Hungary), Sziget Festival, this session will look at how these festivals encourage – or not – cultural exchange in the region.

And in addition, a special Southeastern European Networking Meeting will take place at WOMEX, providing the ideal platform for local and international professionals to connect, collaborate and develop the discussion around how the vision for a regional Music Expo focused on Southeastern Europe, the Black Sea and East Mediterranean can be realised.

That's all for now folks. More sessions and speakers to be confirmed shortly:

offWOMEX PROGRAMME ANNOUNCEMENT: MINAS GERAIS NIGHT (BRAZIL)

With limited Showcase slots available during any year's WOMEX, it is inevitable that there will be some artists who seek a further opportunity to present themselves.

Add to that the many regional, national, organisational or commercial interests who are looking for a chance to expose their artists or services, and you can see why offWOMEX has become such a popular feature.

On Saturday, 20 October, it's the Minas Gerais Night:

- Graveola e o lixo polifônico (Brazil)
- Makely Ka (Brazil)
- Thiago Delegado (Brazil)

The night is organised by Fórum da Música de Minas Gerais, Música Minas, and Governo de Minas.

Stay tuned for the next offWOMEX programme announcements in the coming weeks:

In San Francisco every other year, internationally in interim years, the 2012 IBMF is hosted by Istanbul ensemble KeKeÇa.

A deeply visceral, cross-cultural artistic conversation - the Body Music touring concert can be tailored to fit your budget; and can include community outreach.
