Meet Classical:NEXT at WOMEX

Dear WOMEXicans,

WOMEX palettes packed with Guides, Bags, WOMEXimizers, and plenty of equipment, have been shipped to Greece and are now eagerly awaiting your arrival. In one week's time, international music professionals from around the globe will be gathering in Thessaloniki for WOMEX 12, taking place from Wednesday, 17 to Sunday, 21 October 2012. We are looking forward to seeing you all there...

NEW FACES AT THE TRADE FAIR: GREECE, TURKEY & CZECH REPUBLIC

Besides the most spacious Greek representation at WOMEX ever, there's a number of individual-booth first-timers from Greece at the Trade Fair this year.

Also new in the WOMEX fishbowl is an umbrella stand from neighbouring Turkey: 5.08-5.09.

WOMEX is also pleased to welcome a new Czech umbrella stand at this year's Trade Fair. The organiser of the Czech stand, Hanka Vojtechova (Czech Republic) from Indies Production, says of the Czech participation:

"We are delighted that, for the first time ever, there will be a Czech national stand at WOMEX 12 representing the best of the Czech world music scene including artists, festivals, agencies, promoters and media. Come and check our Czech stand (6.59, 6.64)."

WOMEX SUPPORTS AWARD WINNER VÄRTTINÄ'S PROJECT

Along with their WOMEX Artist Award, Värttinä will be given money to put into a project of their own choice. This is why Värttinä will be using it to support UNICEF Haiti:

"In 2010, in the wake of the unprecedented earthquake, the world came together in solidarity with Haitian children and families to mount an unprecedented response. The resources mobilised after the earthquake have provided more than just short-term emergency interventions, contributing also to longer term development especially in hard-to-reach rural areas that were previously left out. As 2013 approaches, it is important that we continue to build on this hard won progress, ensuring that we are able to fund reconstruction and recovery projects.

In Haiti, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has been working together with the national authorities and UN and civil society partners to keep children alive, safe and learning in Haiti and hundreds of thousands of children have benefitted from these programmes.

We were touched to learn that music has been identified as one of the tools chosen by UNICEF and its partners to support the recovery of the thousands of children who were left traumatised by the earthquake...

To go directly from the airport to the WOMEX Opening at Megaro, take the bus number 78 to bus stop 25 Martiou. It is a 600 metre walk from there to Megaro.

Kitchen Bar hosting the WOMEX DJ Summit is approximately 2.5 kilometres from the main venue Helexpo, or take a taxi, or jump on the bus.

A recently launched and highly useful tool for working out how to get around the city is Thessaloniki's Urban Mobility Center website:
