A stunning vocalist (not to mention accomplished actress for the legendary Peter Brook, with a pixie wit), 'township rose' Nonhlanhla Kheswa represents an intriguing link between the vibrant modernist jazz scenes in South Africa, created by the late Zim Ngqawana and the likes of McCoy Mrubata, Mark Fransman, Kyle Shepherd, and Kesivan Naidoo, and the 'classic' post-bop repertoire pioneered by Kippie Moeketsi and his acolytes (now the household names of South African jazz): Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela, and Jonas Gwangwa. She and her 'Martians' bring a New York energy to it all.
