The band at a glance
A wild mixture of Ska, Reggae, Latin rhythms and Afrobeats, which is pure fun and makes you wanna dance. With their idiosyncratic versions of Soukous (Kongolesian Rumba), Ska and Reggae the band from St. Petersburg made their way directly into the hearts of the audience. They sing in a Babylonian tangle of the languages Russian, Kisuaheli, Lingala, French and English, which forms the congeniality of the band. At least Markscheider Kunst altogether are kids of the present, an offspring of the Russian Rock-, Punk- and Reggae scene.
History & else
Ten years ago in St. Petersburg: Bandleader Efr tried to create Ska on Russian together with cousin Kira and two friends, while Seraphim - Student from former Zaire - together with a bunch of hobby musicans did small time in clubs. A little later Efr and Seraphim got to know eachother at the St. Petersburg institute of mining and formed this splendid band.
In the mid 90ies the bandsmen of Markscheider Kundst were studying mining - therefore the name of the band, an old German term for mesurement engineering. Today Markscheider Kunst only have the name and the "hard work underground", i.e. the gigs in clubs and on festivals, in common with the university. A checkered mixture of styles, a colourful liveshow with eight musicians on stage arose from the meeting of Seraphim and Efr - a music that perfectly combines the different styles. From1996 Markscheider Kunst did more than 500 concerts in Moskow and St. Petersbug clubs. Up there their concerts are announced as the "best party in town".
Since 1998 the band frequently plays in Finnland, USA, Poland, Egypt, Holland, Austria, Swizerland and Germany as well and enjoys growing popularity, expressed in constantly increasing attendance. True to the motto " diminish Europes boundaries and dare to leverage".
After a few changes of the cast in the brass section the best constitution within the band has developed. They sound better than ever. The skilled concertgoer is able to relate to the development potential of the band from show to show and to witness the enhencements of the ingenious musicality of this band.
Beeing one of the few russian bands Markscheider Kunst were able to sign a contract with the international recordcompany EMI / Virgin. "Krasivo Sleva" (2003) and "Na Swjazi"(2004) were released there. In April 2006 the band issued the single "ryba" due to their tour in Germany, Austria and Swizerland. After the tour in October 2006 Markscheider Kunst are going to work on their new album again, which ought to be released in Spring 2007. Afterwards an extended tour is intended, this time in England, Hungary and Benelux.
