AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ & FUNK
with Timba & HipHop-elements
Already as a child blessed with the real groove: He is born in Havana, was responsible for the schoolband's rythm. Since 1986 he is living in Berlin, where he was playing as a drummer in different student-bands in the after-work-hours. He taught himself to play the piano and to compose music; arranged and wrote own song-lyrics until he founded his band at the end of the 90's. Now he also is highly in demand as a percussionist in the Berlin-Latin-and rock-pop-scene and works together with Ivo Mutter, Raz Ohara, Joaquin la Habana and in Kurt Kroemer's Live Show. Today, after more than 10 years of his band's establishment, he developed his own individual style - one that never stands still. Influences of rock, funk, rap with Afro-Cuban heritage are mixed with classic & pop elements - like recently in his program "Cuba Classic & Independent". wwrecords.de by Marcus Waibel.
In 1963 Ricardo Moreno was born in Havanna, Cuba. He grew up in Santiago de Cuba where the San was born. At the age of 6 he started to learn to play the guitar and later had his first solo performances at school events. The guitar didn't remain his only instrument: he soon learned about several percussion instruments and played in the parade band of his school.
In 1986 he had the oppurtunity to attend a socialist training programme in East Berlin, the German Democratic Republic. However, he also stayed focused on music and took drum and percussion lessons. Until the fall of the Berlin Wall he was the drummer of a Cuban Band. After 1990 he both played with several Latino formations as a percussionist and performed solo, singing and playing the guitar.
In 1993 he lived in a home for asylm-seekers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for four years. While he was waiting he started to teach himself how to play the piano and he wrote his first compositions combined with his own lyrics.
After having moved back to Berlin he again was performing with different band formations as a percussionist. In 1990 Ricardo fulfilled his dream and founded his own band with five members. The musical combination of Son and Rock, Funk and Blues resembles the style of the Nueva Trova.
His lyrics are realistic poems and are dealing with Cuba, love, traditional intoxicating celebrations and the unstoppable dilapidation of Havanna.
Today the number of band members has more than doubled and the band is now counting 11 musicians from Mexico, Chile, Armenia, Germany and of course Cuba. As the band has almost become a big band the musical note has also changed. It consists of Afro-Cuban jazz funk combined with timba and hip hop elements. Today Ricardo Moreno is working on his first album produced by Marcus Walbel. It will present Ricardo's new compositions with classic elements.
