MARKKU LEPISTÖ (originally born in Kuortane) is one of the best-known proponents of new Finnish and Nordic folk accordion music. On March 2018, he released his fifth solo album "SOLOS". The album consists of new contemporary folk music instrumental tracks for the three row accordion and also older solo compositions from the early 2000s.
"These new compositions are basically from the years 2012–2013. I´ve tried to put together not only the powerful and memorable themes but also the new playing techniques compined with efectful and modern mixing. Some of the compositions have a strong minimalistic approach and in my opinion it fits very well to the accordion as an colourful and wide-range instrument. Some of my older compositions, like my favorit tune "Silta" I wanted to re-record and correspond with my present sound and interpretation."
Markku Lepistö (b. 1963) completed in 2016 his D.Mus. degree at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. His current activities in addition to his solo projects include playing in the European accordion quintet Samurai with Riccardo Tesi (IT), Kepa Junkera (Basque), David Munnelly (IRL) and Simone Bottasso (IT). In his doctoral research, he explored the history of the accordion in 19th-century Finland.
