Sam Tshabalala is rated as one of the outstanding composers of South African music. His career began in 1978, the year the "Malopoets" were causing quite a stir in South Africa. In 1989 Sam joined the Malopoets for their last tour, while he was already in exile. In 1993 he founded Sabeka. Sam has gathered around him first-rate African musicians living in Paris to record his actual album.
Sabeka's repertoire is deeply steeped in South Africa's ethnic and cultural kaleidoscope. Sam Tshabalala writes his lyrics in Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Shangaan and in English. They are about contemporary South Africa, life in the townships and the aspirations of the people who live there. Various rhythms, languages and traditions of South Africa come together in his music, but there is also jazz, reggae and funk.
