MARENOSTRUM was formed in 1994. They are from Tavira, a village in the southeast of Algarve, Portugal. In 2001 they published their first album, "Estoy em Santa", and in 2005 they published their second album "Almadrava", wich was included on Folk Roots Magazine Play List Chart of March issue. "Almadrava" had reviews on UK Magazine Folk Roots and on Sweden Magazine "Lira". A track from this album was released on Aug-Sept Folk Roots compilation.
The band use a sonority that melts some features of Portuguese folk music (namely from Algarve, such as the "Corridinho" and the "Baile Mandado") with several other influences such as North African, Arabian, Klezmer, Celtic and Cape Verde's music.
MARENOSTRUM's themes deal, mainly, with feelings and enriching life experiences from those who live by the seaside the sea being considered not only as a means of earning one's livelihood, but chiefly as a subject for meditation.
The band's shows are cheerful and expansive, and consistently, through rhythms and melodies easily remembered, they bring the audience to their feet in a dance frenzy. As a result of this, MARENOSTRUM seldom end a show without having to perform a series of encores, thus bringing their audiences some of the old time humour that used to distinguish Algarve's popular festivities. Algarve's typical terms, expressions and vocabulary used by the singer greatly contribute to generating this state of mind and that makes MARENOSTRUM unique in Portuguese music.
MARENOSTRUM enjoys long run stage experience, and their nimbleness and aptitude for communicating provides them a full agenda.
