Salah Ammo was born into a Syrian Kurdish family in 1978 in Darbasiyah, a town northeast of Syria (Al Hassaka region, on the Syrian border with Iraq and Turkey). Growing up among the people of this region where Kurds, Arabs, Turks, Armenians and Assyrians used to live together for thousands of years and being involved in their cultural and musical traditions. He was influenced by the music of these people and their cultures, and gained a lot of experience in presenting it

Salah graduated from the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, Syria, in 2004. He has worked in various fields of music, as bouzouk player, composer, singer and a tutor at the Faculty of Music Education in Homs. He founded Joussour Group for Music and Singing in 2007. Through various performances throughout Syria and the Arab world, Joussour Group (‘joussour’ meaning ‘bridges’) has built a reputation as one of the most important groups in Syria, due to its representation of the songs and cultures of the region. In 2009, Joussour won the Award for Outstanding Concerts from the city of Vendezor (Armenia).

He has performed in Syria, the Arab world and Europe in front of varied audiences, such as at the festival “Images of the Middle East” in Scandinavia, “Al-Medina Festival” in Tunis, Qatar National Theatre in Doha, Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall in Yerevan, Wales Millennium Centre in the UK, Porgy & Bess in Austria, World Museum Vienna, the Damascus Opera House, the National Museum in Damascus, Art House in Damascus , Egyptian Center for Culture and Arts in Cairo, Alexandria Opera House (Sayed Darwish Theatre), as well as Cairo Opera House in the context of the 19th Conference and Festival of Arabic Music.

Salah’s compositions include songs in both Kurdish and Arabic, instrumental music and soundtracks for films and theatre plays. In 2010, Salah Ammo published his first album “Morning Breeze” with own compositions for bouzouk, voice and accompanying instruments. He published in 2011 the album “Places and Directions” for his Group “Joussour”, Salah features in the recordings as bouzouk player, composer and singer. In 2014, Salah Ammo published his third album “Assi – A Story of a Syrian River” with The Austrian percussionist Peter Gabis as a first step for their Due Project. In 2014 the Duo was in the Finale of the „Austrian World Music Award“. Their recend CD „Assi“ was nominated for the Best list of the renowned „Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik“.

Because of the conflict in Syria, Salah settled down in Vienna since 2013.
