King Selewa and his Calypsonians take you on a laid-back romp through the Caribbean with their second album 'Back to mi home'.
The group burst onto the scene in 2007 with their debut 'Calypso Invasion' (ARC, EUCD2076), an album which caught the attention of the Calypso world with its "boisterous spirit, infectious tunes, swooping lead vocals and propulsive Caribbean/African rhythms… the fact of [king selewa's] existence and of his melodic gifts are now well established, never to be questioned" (Ted Boothroyd, JahWorks.org).
'Back to mi home', their relaxed yet vibrant follow-up boasts 15 new tracks, mostly written by King Selewa himself and also including some unique covers, such as Gershwin's 'Summertime', Nat King Cole's 'Calypso Blues' and 'Ridin' on a High and Windy Day' by ska favourites, The Paragons.
The diversity of this project is a reflection of Selewa's own journey. Born in Africa, the young Selewa was raised on a diet of shango, calinda and rada. He eventually realized, through Calypso, the deep influence of African traditions (just like the African griot, the Calypsonian is a newsmonger!) and toured extensively in Europe with a Calypso band including his brother, Lord Skalipsoul. Eventually, Selewa's passion for this music lead him directly to its home: Trinidad and its masters of calypso!
