BAILDSA

In 2007 two brothers Thanos and Yiannis Gountanos dreamed of a band that mixes balkan sounds, gypsy melodies and post punk aesthetic.
The name was Baildsa, a word that comes from turkish (bay?lmak = to faint), which is widely used in villages in the balkans also with similar meanings as fed up, sick of etc.

Since then Baildsa appear with fury at festivals, music halls, venues, bars, streets with excess energy and power, without teeth. The composition of the band gradually modified grafting new elements ska, reggae, rap in the already existing balkan gypsy punk background, resulting in the present composition with: Thanos Gountanos (guitar), Yiannis Gountanos (drums), Yiannis Vamvakas (accordion), Dimitris Havlidis (trumpet), Paschalis Karvounaris (trumpet), Loukas Metaxas (bass).
Their first CD is expected in September 2011.

Band of baildismenoi (fed-up) villagers, and not indignant citizens.
Textured by members that was born and raised at the Southern Balkans, praise the glorious mountains and lowlands! Habitants of the U.S.B. (United Space of Balkans) for many years, we try to come around by stretching wires, striking leather, blowing at holes, squeezing black boxes and by organizing time. Psychologically, sentimentally and financially (the latter is a lost case).
As powerful fishermen (sarkozi-like scums) in heavy sea, and because Saint-Nickolas hasn’t done any miracles, we try to act defying little and huge beasts that demand dominantly our land and our oxygen, rockets and pockets, backs and stomachs, trains and brains, deep thontia (without teeth). In collaboration with the animal antikingdom, avoiding pig-skins, we go forth. Along with fed-up beatles, punk sea rovers, balkan bears and gypsy whales we feel alright and have a great time! Grao…

YULIESKY GONZALEZ

YULIESKY GONZALEZ
With a profound knowledge of both the history of Cuban Jazz as well as the Cuban popular music, and the influences of Classical European music as well as crispy African rhythms, Yuliesky Gonzalez has a fluent ability to write new Cuban Jazz, with an elegance and variation that makes the listener hold the breath in enjoyment. He is capable of lifting the compositions to a level of such quality, that even hardcore musicians get inspired by the innovative tunes.

Classically educated in Camaguey, the young trumpet player started early performing with big names like Omara Portuondo and Felix Valoy, from Buena Vista Social Club, Rolo Martinez from Cubanismo, Grammy winner Rene Luis Toledo, Eddie Palmieri, Alexander Abreu & Habana de Primera, to name a few. Since 2010 he is member of Berlin Big Band and in 2011 he became member of the Kenyan artist Makadem, expanding the band to Makadem & The Afro Cuban Experience. HIs own band "Tierra Caliente" was established in 2010.

SALSA
With a young female singer, Elaine Perez, that has the potential of becoming a new Celia Cruz with her elegant voice and a male singer, Jari Rojas, who sings like a funky street kid, this groovy salsa band will make the audience feel like being at the very best Cuban Clubs. Great authentic music in high level party style. Jari Rojas voice is crispy and sexy, he has been singing Rumba, Salsa and Son since childhood, and is inspired by Jazz and Soul as well. Eliane Perez is educated classically and has an elegancy like the biggest singers of Jazz and Son.

CUBAN JAZZ
It was a straight yes from the two capacities, guitar player Bjarne Roupe (Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Hermeto Pascual, John Scofield, Deedee Bridgewater, Eddie Harris, Toots Thielemans) and Saxplayer Tomas Franck (Joe Henderson, Jerry Bergonzi, Toots Thielemans, John Scofield, Eliane Elias, Bob Brookmeyer, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley, Ernie Wilkens, Art Farmer, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, Dick Oates, Django Bates, David Sanborn) to form part of Gonzalez' group.

"Tierra Caliente" will be CD releasing in spring 2012.

From their beginnings in Brighton, Bacalao have developed into one of the biggest and most colourful Latin show bands in the country. The line up consists of many of the most exciting and talented players in the UK Latin music scene. Much hard work has been put into creating an authentic 'latin/salsa' sound. There are three genuine 'Latinos' in the band, Diego, Rafa & Juan who share lead vocals. All hail from Colombia in South America and the rest are from the UK. Many of the members have, however, journeyed to Cuba, the birthplace of Salsa and studied and played with some of the best bands and musicians. The aim of the band is essentially to make people dance, young and old. We also feel like we want to give back something to the culture that gave us the opportunity to make this beautiful music. The musicians in the band come from a wide range of musical backgrounds, ranging from Klezmer to Jazz, Pop to Punk and Classical to Reggae. This unique combination has resulted in the band presently creating some of the most danceable sounds around. Currently recording their debut album for Viva Music.

Oy Division

Oy Division offers a chance of escaping forward into the Jewish past.

Oy Division play eastern European Jewish folk music the way it is ought to be played: rough, fast, happy, ecstatic, with no extra frills. The cracking fiddle, the crying clarinet, the shouts in Yiddish and Russian - you will not be sure if this music is tragically happy, or manically sad. And it doesn't really matter, as you will dance with everybody else anyway, shouting the double-meaning Yiddish cry of OY.

The band plays a mixture of instrumental songs, wedding music, Yiddish and Russian folk songs as well as songs from the Yiddish Theater, applying the careful scholarship of ethnomusicology with the zeal and exuberance of punk.
Mzungu Kichaa

Mzungu Kichaa means 'the crazy white man'. A name Espen Sorensen picked up from the Tanzanian music scene; crazy because the Danish born singer flows in fluent Kiswahili. Despite his Danish background Mzungu Kichaa is praised, accepted and recognised as one of the pioneers of the powerful youth music of East Africa, Bongo Flava. He recorded with celebrated artists such as Juma Nature, TID, Mangwair, and Ferooz in the late 90s at Bongo Records [Tanzania]. With the release of Mambo ya pwani he topped the East Africa charts in 2001. This song was one of the first songs to take traditional Tanzanian music and fuse it with hip-hop.

Kichaa released his debut album Tuko Pamoja in May 2009; ten original and inspiring songs that speak out about political injustice, poverty, inequality and ways in which we can unite for a better world, including the single Jitolee featuring Prof. Jay and Mwasiti. The album was nominated Best World Album at the Danish World Music Awards, while the music video Jitolee took the African continent by storm. In addition he won Best Upcoming Artist at the African Achievement Awards, in Copenhagen. The African Achievement Awards is organised by the African Diaspora living in Scandinavia.

Kichaa's interest for African music started at the early age of six, when his family moved to Zambia. He would soon learn to play traditional Tonga drums with his friends at local weddings. His enthusiasm for learning local music traditions gradually transformed his life story to one that does not lend itself to easy conclusions. He strongly believes music is the key to build bridges between cultures and people, and has managed to live up to this belief through his own complex identity and musical voyage.

The artist's unique guitar and clean vocals coupled with the upbeat sound of his Tanzanian band Bongo Beat brought new life to the Sauti za Busara Music Festival in February 2010. This was the first of many dynamic performances long awaited for from his fans who've endorsed Kichaa to perform and feature throughout East Africa, on Radio and TV, where many of his concerts have been sold out. Subsequently he and his band completed a successful tour in Denmark including appearances on National TV, Newspapers and Radio.

In 2010 Kichaa was selected as a jury for the Danish World Music Awards and as one of three judges for the biggest televised music talent show in Tanzania Bongo Star Search. He recently featured in a Danish documentary series, Black Business, portraying and supporting the music industry in Tanzania and also advocated a Tanzanian maternity project by welcoming artists from New York to work with Tanzanian artist, such as Lady JD and Fid Q; creating a platform to record and perform resulting in a concert series called Bongo Flava meets Brooklyn Flava.

As an ambassador of Tanzanian contemporary music and the founder of the independent label Caravan Records, Mzungu Kichaa aims to empower Tanzanian musicians to make Bongo Flava available outside of East Africa: 'There is so much talent out there that can open our minds and expand our horizons'.

Mzungu Kichaa is currently working on his second album anticipated to be launched in December 2011. Mzungu Kichaa holds a BA in Ethnomusicology and a Masters in African Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies [SOAS, UK].

HENRY COLE & AFROBEAT COLLECTIVE

HENRY COLE
Twenty eight year old drummer Henry Cole emerged onto the music scene in old San Juan in 1999 where he studied classical percussion at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. However, it was not until a few years later--while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston-- that Cole's musical evolution pointed him naturally towards the jazz tradition. He went back home with a new energy and focus and performed as the "house drummer" for the 1st Annual "Jazzboriken" Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He played with such Latin jazz luminaries as Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Valentin, Anthony Carrillo, Dave Valentin, Paoli Mejias, currently he is a drummer of Miguel Zenon, David Sanchez and Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez .

Roots Before Branches (New Album Release on 2012)

Afro-Beat Collective was inspired by the influence of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, legendary Nigerian Afro-Beat musician and Human Rights activist. The music of this recording is a result of a fusion of Afro-Beat, Puerto Rican Bomba (Sika), Cuban Rumba, English Rock, American Jazz and R&B and focuses on the sensibilities, intent and message that each of these genres historically express. In other words, the Project embodies a conceptual musical approach expressed as a collective by individual musicians, each sharing a developed and progressive musical background, knowledge and experience. It also focuses on political messages, strong commitment and the ability to reach a wide range audience through Afro-Puerto Rican Music.

The foundation of the Rhythm is based on the "Bomba" , tradition from Puerto Rico, mostly "Bomba Sika" and "Bomba Cuembe"; the rhythmic knowledge and European influences of the "Cuban Rumba" and the strong commitment to the "Groove" and "Soulfulness" of R&B music. A combination that when mixed with the intellectual, experimental virtuosity characteristic of Jazz music with a strong emphasis on "organic interactions" results in an explosive, rhythmic, memorable sound filled with life, history and universality. To exemplify this music, Cole imagines - Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" sessions: only that instead of going in the direction of Rock like it did, imagine if the session had gone more towards the Afro Caribbean traditions.

Afro-Beat Collective explores the need and importance of exploring and sharing thoughts, desires, emotions , history and culture through music. This work uses musical folklore as a source of inspiration.

The objective of this project is to to create music derived from a deliberate intention to transmit a message of determination, substance and, most importantly, Unity. To see music as One World, a musical space that transcends and breaks free from styles and any kind of sound that compromises the skills of the musicians playing and the importance of musicianship or group collaboration and expression.

Duo Sverre Indris Joner/Gustavo Tavares

BRAZILAN CHAMBER-MUSIC - DUO INDRIS/TAVARES

The Duo Tavares/Joner explore the boundaries between popular and classic music-tradition with emphazise on Brazil, Cuba, Argentina and Venezuela. The rhytmical aspects of this music is rarely heard convincingly performed by classical musicians. The classical subtleness and tone-qualities are on the other hand seldom found in authentic performers of theese music-forms. In the Duo Tavares/Joner a fusion of the two opposite aestethics are combined.
This collaboration between brazilian cellist Gustavo Tavares and Sverre Indris Joner is exploring a rarely exposed side of Latin American Music. Composers like Ignacio Cervantez and Ernesto Lecuano from Cuba or Ernesto Nazareth and Chiguinha Gonzaga from Brazil are hardly played in the classic concerthalls, although their significant contribution of locally founded musical has got many interesting chamber musical qualities that is really worth attention.

Sverre Indris Joner is considered the foremost specialist in latin-american music in Norway. Having studied percussion in Cuba and several trips around latinamerica may be one of the explanations why he has accuired such an authetic approach to theese styles. He is constantly exploring the boundaries of latin music in conjunction with a variety of other styles.

Gustavo Tavares has been described as "one of the most important Brazilian names in the classical music of our time" (Correio Braziliense) and is considered a specialist on Latin American music. In 1995, together with clarinetist Paquito d'Rivera and argentine pianist Pablo Zinger, the ensemble Triangulo was nominated for a Grammy Award. According to American critic C. Berg the trio redefine the basic assumptions of chamber music.

TSUUMI SOUND SYSTEM

"A dangerously addictive rollercoaster ride
through Finnish folk, jazz, heart-wrenching ballad
and unstoppable dance music, with a little Balkan edge" FIONA TALKINGTON, Songlines, BBC

"This is a powerful and exciting band, which reminds at times of the Scandinavian greats of folk innovation" MIKE MOLL, Folkworld

Folk, funk and fun... This is somehow the unusual combination of this "ethno urban folk" band from Finland who is enthusing young people - and not only - in Nordic and Baltic countries with a broad and yet fresh sound: accordion, fiddles, double bass and percussion on the one hand, and bright, airy saxophone, guitar, cittern and piano on the other one.

The music of Tsuumi Sound System is very much a fusion. It is rooted in the traditional Finnish "pelimanni music" (Nordic Folk), but it fits the definition of modern world music. Foreign listeners tend to identify something Northern in the lucid sound, but Celtic and Balkan influences have also been detected, much to the band's surprise.

BACKGROUND

Tsuumi Soundi System emerged alongside Tsuumi, a contemporary dance company. Founded in 1998, it has since become one of Finland's internationally most notable modern folk music bands. Over the years, the band has gone through a number of changes, but by the time of their fifth studio album, HOTAS (2007), their lineup has stabilized into eight members, and the name Tsuumi Sound System was established (earlier albums were released under the name Tsuumi). Their second album in this guise, GROWING UP, was released in summer 2009.

With those albums, the band actually acquired a ninth important member: producer Roger Tallroth, a super-name in Swedish folk music. The combination works well. Albums have racked up an impressive number of stars in record reviews around the world. Songlines magazine put Hotas on the Top of the World list in January 2008, and the critic declared "modestly" that the album is perfect. The same happened with Growing Up ("An impeccable follow-up to an impeccable debut").

The band has been particularly praised for the incredible energy they put into their live performances. Members have the knack of projecting their joy of making music to the very last row of the hall, and they have become accustomed to playing several encores to standing ovations. Southern European audiences in particular have taken this Northern world music to heart.

AWARD-WINNING FUSION

The album HOTAS received a TEOSTO AWARD nomination in 2008 (Finnish Composers' Copyright Society) and was selected as TOP OF THE WORLD album by SONGLINES magazine (Jan.)

The same year, the perfect rating of five stars was given to HOTAS by German IN MUSIC magazine, as well as a nomination in the Folk & Folklore category of the German Music Critic's Awards.

In autumn 2009, a piece named CASINO written by Hannu Kella won first prize in the 'instrumental jazz song' category at the JUST PLAIN FOLKS Music Awards in the USA. This was a remarkable achievement considering that the band have not yet toured in North America at all (an oversight that will probably soon be corrected) and that there were more than 560,000 candidate songs in the Awards, all categories considered.

The album GROWING UP was nominated for the best ethnic album of the year in 2010 (EMMA AWARDS - Finnish Grammy Awards).

Diafanes is a high energy rock band whose body of work is inspired by Sao Paulo itself, a city built by immigrants from across the world, and reflected through the music's strong ethnic influence. Their shows often include a belly dance performance, as well as the use of exotic instruments such as the Brazilian cuica and triangle, theremin, castanets, and koto (Japanese harp).

The band was formed in 2002 and will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012.

During their nine years of career, the group has made national and international tours, playing in important festivals, such as the SXSW in Austin, TX - USA, The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC - USA, and the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, RS - Brazil.

"Sao Paulo, Brazil's indie-rock quartet Diafanes aren't without the clitter-clat of a flamenco beat" - Columbus Alive (USA)

"Diafanes is a new voice in the Brazilian Alternative Rock scene. Lyrics in English and a mix of a female pop vocal, very well interpreted by Lorena Hollander, with heavy guitars. See Through is a heavy album with room for experiments." - Modern Drummer Magazine (Brazil)

"Their music sounds pretty rulin'. No joke" - Moutain X (USA)

Behrang Miri

Behrang Miri, a multitalented Swedish artist with roots in Iran. With a mindblowing eclectic sound and a unique approach to hip hop music he delivers rhymes in a way you don't see much of these days. He always finds new directions in his artistry and he is part of the hip hop scene as much as the globally growing world music scene. Since his latest album "The book of our life", several singles and tours he has created a musical spot on his own in the everchanging musical landscape. All this has finally crystalised into his forthcoming album "Dance To The Revolution" which doesn't sound like anything you've previously heard with him. Behrang Miri has on "Dance To The Revolution" put the Swedish language on the shelf to rocket his music to a new level in English. The sound on his new album is a mix of electronic clubfantasies, intriguing storytelling and melodies from the Middle East, South America and North Africa in a futuristic fusion. Behrang Miri's music is a perfect blend where east meets west and his middle eastern origin influences his music which gives it its original touch. Behrang is not just a rapper with lyrical skills. He uses his skill to say something. He believes in fighting against injustice and is not afraid to take a stand with his songs. His successes with the songs "Free Iran" and "Ramallah" shows that it pays off to rap as you learn. People say that action speaks louder than words; with Behrang his action speaks as loud as his words. A live performance with Behrang is an enchanting experience of its own. With his live band consisting of oud, violin, darbouka, congas and guitar he delivers nothing like your typical hip hop artist. Throw in a DJ in the mix and you will not be disappointed whether you're into hip hop,rap or whatever. Behrang has a unique quality to rock every crowd no matter the current circumstances, a performance that doesn't leave any one untouched. Behrang Miri has been touring all around Sweden, Scandinavia, Brazil, Lebanon, South Africa, Kenya, Turkey, England and Palestine. Besides performing and touring on his own he has been support act to artists like Blackstreet, Outlandish and Omarion and he has performed with world-famous Iranian rappers like Hichkas and Shahin Najafi. He has also collaborated with Palestine's biggest rap group Dam, Beatnuts and Sweden's biggest world music artist Ale Moeller. The Palestine Tour was a way to draw attention to the compilation "Hip Hop 4 Gaza". It was documented by a crew from Sweden that was following Behrang during his time in Palestine. The result became a successful documentary called "Hip Hop 4 Gaza". The documentary premiered in spring '11 at the international film festival in Gothenburg and is planned to be broadcasted on Swedish National Television in autumn '11. As a program leader, debater, writer, radio host, speaker amongst other things he's become known as a polymath without boundaries. Whether it's about debating at a morning TV- show, hosting a radioshow or writing as a columnist in the paper, nothing is too big a task for Behrang Miri. He is in Sweden considered to be one of the biggest opinion leaders and artist when it comes to questioning integration issues etc.
A few examples are worth mentioning. Behrang Miri was interviewed by the living legend Mats Nileskaer that has been the host for Swedish National Radio's show P3 Soul since 1978. The interview became a discussion about todays hip-hop and the part it has taken in the democracy movement among the youth in the middle east. He has also been interviewed and portrayed by The New York Times, Al-Jazeera International and Iranian Voice of America. The weekly music show Kook on Persian BBC viewed by millions of Iranians around the world produced an hour long show about Behrang. For his many achievements Behrang has won many awards such as "Joyspreader of the Year" in 2008. This year alone he has received two scholarships, from Alma he was rewarded for his hard work in the youth movement RGRA which he established. RGRA is a movement that works with youths in lower class areas in Malmoe with a lot of immigrants and refugees. In different ways RGRA uses music like hip hop, dancing and producing as pedagogic tools to help youths to grow. From the trust "Goera Gott" (eng: doing good) he was rewarded for his social activism and for building bridges between different cultures and generations. At the age of 27 Behrang Miri has written his own blueprint of success already establishing himself as an artist, lecturer, host, actor, writer and coordinator for the organization RGRA and much more. His passion and engagement for social change is something that is essential in his music. Take the song "Free Iran" as an example. Both the video and song has spread around the globe like a wild fire. The song is about the situation by which the youth and others live in Iran. The song "Ramallah" is inspired by a traditional folksong from Palestine. On the track Behrang Miri raps about life and the situation the people are living in on an everyday basis in occupied Palestine.

Palestinian oud player and composer Adel Salameh was born in Nablus, Palestine, in 1966. He started performing as a soloist while still living in the Arab World but immigrated to Europe in 1990. He quickly established a reputation as one of the finest oud performers. He has performed in more than thirty countries including Japan, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and numerous countries in North Africa and Europe.

Adel believes that music is an excellent tool to build bridges between various cultures. In an effort to tackle these cultural barriers, he has worked with Turkish, Spanish, Indian, French, English, Israeli and Greek musicians. He has worked with Womad/Real World for six years and performed at the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre in London, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Royal Tropical Institute, the Paradiso in Amsterdam, the Institute of the Arab World in Paris, The Opera House and the Auditorium in Lyon.

Together with the french cellist Didier Petit, the greek lute player Dimitris Varelopoulos and the german percussionist Michael Metzler, Adel presents a new program, based on his latest compositions, released in the new album "Awda". This album was written during Adel's last visit to his birthplace Palestine. He composed the music inspired by the beautiful landscapes of the country and by the daily life of the people who live there. In Adel's new program the vivid improvisations of the four musicians with their different cultural backgrounds blend into a unique auditive experience that takes the audience on a trip around Mediterranean.

TANGOWERK by NHOAH

"Men cry. Women seduce. Melancholic TANGOWERK enriches the spirit. Synthesizers flirt with a bandoneon. Nothing is impossible." (NHOAH, 2011)

Buenos Aires, 2005: NHOAH was taking time out in the city at the Rio de la Plata. He needed time out from his career in Germany as a music producer, composer and musician, collaborating with a broad variety of artistsfrom Romy Haag to Bronski Beat, from The Pogues to Mia.

Buenos Aires, 2005: a refuge from repetition and stagnation, a source of something new and unexpected. Deeply inspired by the uplifting melancholy of the tango, NHOAH creates TANGOWERK. Tango is more than a musical passion and pursuit... it is a way of experiencing life, equally suffused with suffering as potency. And it's this ambivalence which shapes each element of TANGOWERKits music, lyrics and aesthetic. Losing yourself in weltschmerz, without losing hope. The gravitational pull of traditional tango, offset by the explosive energy of electronica. Theatrical vocal performances, with authentic passion and longing.

TANGOWERK, 2010: NHOAH's debut solo album is also the mirror of a life lived through music. The gramophone sounds of his childhood are recreated with analogue radio techniques and close harmony effects, his evolution into glam rock is projected via synthesizers and glitter rain, and his time in Berlin's 80s gay and transvestite scenes finds expression in the androgyny of the TANGOWERK aesthetic. It is a life in fourteen songs.

In developing this project, NHOAH enlisted friends, artists and agitators from the Berlin music and art scene. Together, this traumwerkstattliterally, the workshop where dreams are mademakes a pilgrimage to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Berlin group searches for the highest degree of artistic collaboration and finds it in an intense creative process that moves from meetings with Argentinian musicians, to extraordinary studio sessions to late night odysseys through tango and burlesque clubs. And it doesn't stop there. When the microphones, cameras and lights are turned off, and the bandoneon and synthesizers have fallen silent, the conversations, and collaborations continue to bear fruit.

From this passionate collision between the worlds of Berlin and Buenos Aires, NHOAH has created a multi-faceted world... the world of TANGOWERK, which exists somewhere between imagination and reality, euphoria and melancholy. With steamy, breathy, screaming, taunting voices, with tango orchestration and synthpop, shellac sound and electronic stylings; TANGOWERK seduces you into delirious dancing on the volcano while simultaneously clearing the mind for the simmering struggles ahead.

HOVEDEN SOCIAL CLUB

Salsa in Norwegian or: Contrafactive music-history in practice

Assume this hypothesis:
What if todays/yesterdays Norwegian popular music was transported to another time and place like the Caribean?
What if the whole country got lost in a time-machine and ended up in Havanna in the year 1950?
What if, almost forgotten Norwegian songs like "Naar kastanjene blomstrer i Bygdoy Alle" and "Jeg tror paa sommeren" reincarnated and got new life with bloodstreams that swells with vitality and hips that melts with sensuality?
Unknown possibilities, designed to moisten up the most rigid sceptic, unveils itselves on the horizon...

Or to put it more comprehensable:

Hovedoen Social Club is an intriguing project put together by norwegian pianist Sverre Indris Joner. This sextet plays popular Norwegian songs that are re-arranged and played as if it was authentic cuban son/salsa. Hovedoen Social Club is best described as an alternative and exciting musical research-project Contrafactive music-history But the result hardly as dry as a laboratory... Judge for yourself

CLASICOS A LO CUBANO

Imagine Beethovens Fifth' seemlessly fusioning with a danceable salsabeat, or Strauss' Blue Danube as a coquet chachacha, yet keeping the essence of the classic piece...? Apparently impossible Doomed to be bad-taste and cheesy Or is it? Sverre Indris Joner's ingenious arrangements have refuted the prejudices and taken classic-musiclovers and the latin community by surprise. As seen on YouTube performed by KORK (Norwegian Radio Orchestra) and Hoveden Social Club, the recordings on DVD have even reached top ranking on the Mexican World Music Charts. Big bands in Venezuela are already doing cover-versions of his arrangements. The recording will soon be released aslo in the rest of Latin America and the US.
That the project is acclaimed by latin-music connoisseurs worldwide confirmes that its question of a more profound understanding of clave and cuban music, and the sole fact that the legendary bassplayer Carlos del Puerto (Irakere, Cubanisimo) is a part of the soloist group confirm that this is more than just another "gringo showing of his borrowed feathers".

                        ....Electrocuting the tango....

Argentine tango-poet Horacio Ferrer about Electrocutango:
"Sverre Indris Joner is a creative remarcable tanguist and has with Electrocutango obtained a total, irreproachable and refined version of new tango in this 21st century.
This admirable Norwegian pianist, composer, arranger and director demonstrates that the tango still can keep its youthful aesthetic and challenging courage like in the old times.
He sometimes remind of my dear colleague Osvaldo Tarantino. His devotion for the styles of Salgan and Piazzolla shines through, using it as exquisite perfumes within a totally personal style full of rhythmic complexity, reflected in his inspired and original compositions."
Although from Norway, Electrocutango did their latest release in Buenos Aires (on Random Records) and played at legendary tangoclubs like La Viruta and Club Catedral, bohemian cafees like Sanata Bar and modern music-clubs like Club Notorious. And at the prestigious Academia Nacional Del Tango The national tango-academy in Argentine, where bandleader & composer Sverre Indris Joner got the honorary title Academico Correspondiente at Academia Nacional Del Tango de Argentina from nobody less than Horacio Ferrer.

Closer to an "approved-stamp" its hard to get...

The internationally acclaimed quartet combines the unlikely task of playing classics like Brahms or Grieg and popular tunes like ABBA or James-Bond-Theme as if it was argentine tango. At the same time they frequently figure as soloist with prestigious symphony orchestras in Europe like BBC Symphony Orchestra or Deutsche KammerPhilharmonie as well as several orchestras in Scandinavia.
Their combination of traditional argentine tango ("Tango as it should be..." BUENOS AIRES HERALD),
audace versions of Piazzolla, and their own inspired compositions give them a unique sound that is combined with a humorous and energetic attitue not common in the tango world. ("The truth is that i love them" F. Suarez Paz, violinist in Piazzollas quintet)
They challenge the boundaries of tango without loosing the essential ingredients.
