Costel Vasilescu was born in 1940. His father took him along to weddings when he was 14 years old. The young Gypsy musician furnished his trumpet with a mute, thus giving the instrument his unique velvet sound and making him a legend in Romania. Using his trumpet he refined the best recordings of "muzica lautareasca" by the most exposed musicians from the early 50's until today.
"However, I'm aware that the time of the old Lautari tradition is up, but as long as I can still hold my trumpet I'm going to continue playing the songs which enriched my life along with my old travelling companions" His band is made up of accordion, violin, clarinet, tambal, double bass and vocals and performs the Sounds From A Bygone Age.
CD series "Sounds From A Bygone Age" released 2005-2008 on Asphalt Tango Records
