With an astute eye for lyrical detail, a rich vocal tone that harks back to classic Motown-era soul and a direct and expressive guitar style, 24 yr old singer / songwriter Louis Baker is one of the most promising new talents to emerge from New Zealand in recent years.
After the release of his debut single 'Even in the Darkness' which received extensive radio play last December Baker performed solo at a series of New Zealand's most prestigious summer festivals including Rhythm and Vines, Rhythm and Alps and La De Da. He then flew home to Wellington to rehearse his all-star, four-piece band for a national, headlining tour. His popularity was galvanised while winning the most votes this January on The Audience, a website dedicated to new, unreleased music. The prize included a recording session at Neil Finn's Roundhead studios and music video funding.
Baker recently attended the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in New York, when he was chosen out of 4000 applicants to take one of only 60 places. Producer Just Blaze (Jay-Z, Kayne West, Eminem), one of four tutors at the academy, invited Baker to his studio after the academy and says of Louis after his debut show in New York "That guy was incredible...we're going to be hearing a lot more of him".
Louis then went on to London to play a series of shows that left audiences breathless and to record his soon to be released debut self-titled EP with producer Andy Lovegrove (Breaks Co-Op, Super Grass). Recorded with just guitar, a string quartet and Bakers vocals the listener can expect to be taken on an intimate, soulful, honest and reflective journey.
Earlier this year, Louis Baker released his second single. "Birds" is a single that showcases Louis voice front and centre with just his guitar and simple strings to adorn it.
Louis is currently touring to sold out shows nationally as a solo artist.
