Concha Vargas

Concha Vargas

Concha Vargas is a refreshing throwback to the spirit of traditional flamenco. Her pasión was enjoyably playful in the distances way of new flamenco when she performed on Friday night. But there was not a trace of classical ballet or modern interpretive dance in her twining arms or her feb, which enunciated a sufficiently complex array of rhythms in a Martinete-Seguiriyas and an Alegrías in “Gipsy Flamenco”, produced by the World Music Institute. Best of all, Ms. Vargas’s large, unmovable-looking torso thrusts tose arms and feb through space like the unstoppable force of nature that flamenco dancing once resembled.
