Wisnik & Nertrovski

The End of the Song
Ze Miguel Wisnik and Arthur Nestrovski

4-cycle classes shows

Not exactly concerts or proper classes, but a unique blend of two things: bringing together the musical talents, literary and academic composer, singer and pianist (and a professor at USP) Ze Miguel Wisnik and composer, guitarist, writer and critic (and Publifolha editor) Arthur Nestrovski. The performances bring a selection of songs, composing a minipanorama of Brazilian music of the past 50 years.

Each time, Wisnik and Nestrovski center the subject in three or four main songs, performed live and then commented, in contrast to a number of issues and a number of other songs too. "The End of the Song" here wins several meanings: purpose and arrival point, the end of a cycle, and endless purpose. The recent debate about the "death of the song" is the background, and it goes through topics ranging from the formation of the Brazilian songbook to the composing of lyrics and music; passing through the transformative powers of bossa nova and Tropicalia to the new statute of the songs, that have no place in mass culture. The two performers sing and tell our music history, with specific comments to songs by Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Los Hermanos, Joao Donato, Tom Jobim, Luiz Tatit and Gilberto Gil - more Schumann and Schubert - among others, placed by them in the current Brazilian context.

1. Promise of Happiness (Tom / Vinicus, bossa-nova)
2. Samba: mischief and melancholy
3. Unidentified objects (from the tropicalia to the transamba)
4. The end of the song (critical state)
