Renate Hornstein
was born on August 31st in 1982 in Vienna/Austria as the daughter of her Armenian/American mother and her Austrian father, both well-acclaimed classical musicians/cellists. Inspired by her rich musical and cultural background she began to play the violin at the age of eight but would soon turn to what became her very favorite instrument: the voice.
She started her vocal training (jazz, pop, musical) at the age of twelve with Kathy Sampson who worked with her for the next six years, later on switched to classical voice training with opera singer Elfriede Hobarth.
At an early age, she discovered her love for writing songs and lyrics and began to work and perform with various musicians, one of them being the Viennese guitarist Thomas J. Lang with whom she released her first album "orplid skies" (extraplatte) in 2003 at the age of 21.
When they both decided to go separate musical ways, she continued writing songs and founded her new quartet merging piano, double bass, drums and voice into what became her very personal first solo album "the very heart of things" , released in April 2008.
