Sauti za Busara music festival takes place annually in Zanzibar for six days around the second weekend of February. It's a festival that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds in celebration of the wealth and variety of music from East Africa.
Spanning four days in Stone Town with "Busara Xtra" shows around town and beach locations, the festival has firmly established itself as one of East Africa's finest annual events.
A carnival and street parade through Zanzibar Town kicks off festivities, featuring a beni brass band, drummers, dancers, stilt walkers and acrobats alongside many of the visiting artists.
More than four hundred musicians (forty groups) perform on the main stage, constructed in the grassy side of the Old Fort where the main festival is centred. Thirty groups are from East Africa and ten travel from different parts of the African continent and diaspora. This year the event also hosts screenings of films related to African music in the amphitheatre of the Old Fort, giving audiences the chance to listen, dance and celebrate or relax, watch and contemplate!
Music performances continue non-stop from 4pm to 1am daily. Admission is free to all daily before sunset. The festival venue hosts bars, stalls selling food, clothes, handicrafts, local and international music.
Sauti za Busara showcases the best established and upcoming artists of the region. Tanzania's Daily News got the vibe, describing it as "the friendliest festival on Planet Earth."
