With the sweetly exuberant chanting of five female voices, the warm tones of the marimba, the rattle and roll of the drums and guasa percussion surrounding the lilting voice of singer Nidia Sofia Gongora, Canalon de Timbiqui embody the rich musical mix of African and Latin- American traditions unique to Colombia's Pacific coast. The group was formed by Elizabeth Sinisterra, a schoolteacher from the small town of Timbiqui and over the past decade has progressed from school choir to award-winning ensemble, sweeping up prizes at the important Petronio Alvarez Festival in the city of Cali, where they are now based. Their new album Una Sola Raza awaits international release but their upward act continues; last year they made their first trip abroad at the invitation of SXSW and now they are ready to charm everybody at WOMEX.
