A talented protégé of the great qawwali maestro Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Asif Ali Khan belongs to a family of famous musicians. Taking inspiration from his mentor, Asif and his ensemble have a unique traditional and contemporary rendering style. The qawwâl sings the sacred words of the inspired poet in Persian, Hindu or Urdu, depending on the origin of the poetry.
Backed by an incredible rhythmic section consisting of handclapping and the inevitable dholak, the singer enjoys repeating a powerful, hypnotic verse. Praises to the saint are uttered again and again like an invocation by choirs, heartrending and enrapturing at the same time.
A tarab effect is created, giving rise to the loss of self control.
