Naples’s volcano and the tarantula unveil an unsettled and overwhelming energy, which moves with Canto Antico from the countryside to the city, gathering a fresh musical breath. Their music is a strong homage to the roots and the meaning of being from the South of Italy nowadays.

The voice performs a meaningful and archaic world, which turns around the essential rhythmic drive of the Tammorra (a traditional frame drum), while the Piffero (a traditional reed instrument) betrays its origins. It plays with the modern sound of the bass guitar and a multi-percussion set.

The final effect is a compact rhythmic and danceable sound, that has been enthusing audiences throughout Europe over the last years, from the most prestigious theatres, festivals and Indie-Clubs in Italy to the Tanztage in Potsdam, Germany to the Boombal Festival in Ghent, Belgium and Vielle Ville in Belfort, France.

The actual material has been recorded by Fabio Rizzo (Waines, Pan del Diavolo), mixed by JD Foster (Calexico, Marc Ribot, Vinicio Capossela) and mastered by Hannes Jaeckl (Opeth, Sans Secours, official RockHard Festival).

Canto Antico performed a Dario Fo (Nobel Prize in literature 1997) sponsored theatre show, conducted by his most important student and artistic heiress, Marina De Juli.

Canto Antico worked with “Piccola Orchestra del Mediterraneo”, made up of famous Italian musicians, such as the jazz-man Guido Bombardieri.

For the last 15 years Canto Antico has also been organizing traditional music and dance workshops and festivals to spread southern Italian culture.
