Erica Smith has been the Chief Executive Officer of the Barbadian collective management organisation, the Copyright Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Incorporated (COSCAP) since 2000 which administers the rights of the composers, authors, publishers, performers and producers of musical works both local and international in Barbados
She obtained a BSc. (hons) degree in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies and continued her studies in the Netherlands at the State University of Groningen. There she gained a Master of Science degree in International Business Management doing her research in Corporate Governance. Whilst in the Netherlands she developed an interest in technology transfer licensing which resulted in her furthering her studies at the University of Alicante in Spain where she gained a Master of Intellectual Property Law.
In 2004 she completed a LLB programme with the University of London thereby strengthening her legal background. Ms. Smith also has a LL.M in Sports Law and Management and has done executive studies in corporate governance at the Harvard Kennedy School.
She is also Managing Director of a consultancy firm, Conceptualisation Incorporated and has written several papers on the commercialisation and development of the intellectual property regime in the Caribbean, these include Development of a Model Audiovisual Co-production Treaty for CARIFORUM Member States, The National Intellectual Property Strategic Plan of Barbados, Intellectual Property Assessment of the Three Campuses of the University of the West Indies and Trade Liberalisation and the Cultural Industries in Barbados. Through Conceptualisation she has also presented various training programmes.
Miss. Smith has also tutored for six years in various subject areas in the Distance Education programme of the University of the West Indies including International Business, Business Policy and Strategy and Caribbean Business Development.
