CONTEXT:
By 300 BC settlements dotted all of the southern half of Mexico. Monte Albàn (White Mountain), the Zapotec capital, was Mexico’s, and probably South America’s largest town.
The Zapotecs had developed a big, peace-loving culture and their drawings and hieroglyphs refer to a calendar and a written language, probably the first in Mexico and Central America.
BIOGRAPHY:
CECILIA MORALES.
Poetic, pasionate and melancholic. With her warm, deep voice, Cecilia Morales creates an atmosphere that echoes the ancient culture of the zapotecs.
Born in 1961 in Oaxaca, México. Cecilia sang with her father as a young girl, traditional indian songs basically relating to the tragedy of human life, and wich love and death go hand in hand.
As a classically trained opera singer Ms Morales sang works by Bach, Brahms, Puccini, Verdi, Beethoven. During her years of study Cecilia sang in various choirs, such as the choir of the University of Veracruz. But Ms. Morales was drawn more strongly to the music of her ancestors. Cecilia Morales molds traditional songs into a new shape. Forgotten lyrics and an idiom, Didxazáa, that has all but dissappeared, come to life in the songs of the Binnizáa, “people from the clouds”. Cecilia Morales sings these songs in the ancient tongue.
Cecilia Morales sings in the film “GUCHACHI” directed by Abraham Oceransky, a film about the lives of the zapotecs.
Cecilia Morales began concertizing in 1993, and her music has attracted much attention in her own country, and also in Europe, where she has performed at festivals such as: Sfinks Festival, in Antwerpen, Belgie. And Festival Cultural del Istmo, in Espinal, Oaxaca. México.
