Drawing on the rembetiko repertoires of Anatolia and Greece, Cafe Aman marks a rebirth for rembetiko in Istanbul, reviving and renewing the spirit of the Cafe Aman taverns as a symbol of the melting-pot culture of the Ottoman Empire of a century ago. Cafe Aman Istanbul was founded in 2009 by Stelios Berberis and Pelin Suer with musicians from the Turkish Music Conservatory, later joined by bouzouki player Dimitris Lappas from Thessaloniki, and released its first album Fasl-i Rembetiko at the beginning of 2012. The Cafe Aman taverns were a mainstay of Ottoman life, where there was no distinction between performer and audience, where the music and dancing was not just entertainment but part of the fabric of social interaction. The Cafe Aman ensemble aims to bring this creative ethos fully back to life.
