Jono Das is the creative trade name of Jono de Alwis; a man who wears an extraordinary number of hats as a beat-maker, producer, artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and videographer.
Jono works on forging a sound reminiscent of golden-era East Coast hip-hop, where jazz influenced drum samples are guided by a mellow tone and crisp production, informing a relaxed soundscape.
Jono Das has been described as possessing “a musical style that is informed as much by the Impulse and Blue Note catalogues as it is the Def Jam label.” (Noisey, Vice 2015)
Jono is fast becoming one of the more industrious of producers within the New Zealand Hip Hop scene. Over the past 12 to 18 months Jono has released an absolute tirade of new music. His projects shift from Jazz influenced and sample rich instrumentals to collaborative projects that host a community centric outlook, such as ‘The Lion & The Lotus’ an album built as an explorative creative project between Jono and Angelo King of Third3ye fame.
The latest of such offerings, Illustrations EP is a conceptual 'psychedelic jazz rap' project produced and mastered as a long-play record featuring a "who's who" of the NZ Hip Hop scene.
Boasting a lineup of collaborations with the likes of Raiza Biza, Third3ye, eo (Badcrop), Rizvan, Lisa Wright and more. Illustrations EP is a reflection of many influences, both musical and visual, it is an inspired body of work. Jazz, soul, Latin, sketchbook drawings and
of course hip hop; all have made their mark on this project.
