In this edition only a small specimen from the rich musical variety of Macedonia is represented, the emphasis being on the music of Chalkidhiki, where Xanthippe Karathanassi, who performs all the songs contained in this compact disc, was born and raised. It was only natural that the tunes and airs selected for this anthology should be those with which this gifted singer has a special, life-long, relationship.
MY LOVE SENT WORD TO ME
Slow syrtos dance for women in three-step, and / or a wedding serenade; Chalkidhiki.
O, STONE-VAULTED FOUNTAIN
A local syrtos dance of distinct character; Western Macedonia.
A PARTRIDGE IS BUILDING ITS NEST
Local syrtos, danced with arms crossed over and known as the “triantaphyllia”; Chalkidhiki.
A STRANGER HERE, A STRANGER THERE
A song of exile, sung seated at table; Eastern Macedonia.
A MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTER
Slow karsilamas (dance performed by facing couples); Chalkidhiki.
WHY DID I FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU? or “THE ELEVEN”
A Western Macedonian dance in which dancers perform individually, whence its names “scattered” or “uncoupled”.
