He is one of the most important representatives of the Cuban Nueva Trova Movement of the 70ies.
More and more boycotted by Fidel Castro's regime due to their critical content, lately his productions were living in the shadow of the internationally hyped Buena Vista boom.
In April 2005 his new CD was released by the New York based label Escondida:
On Rustico he finds his very own way of combining Cuban rhythms with instruments that are rarely used in Cuban music (such as cajon and marimbula).
On his European winter tour Pedro Luis Ferrer (vocals, guitar, tres) will be acompanied by his daughter Lena Ferrer (voc., perc.), multi instrumentalist Lerlys Morales (guitar, perc.) and Basilio Perodin (perc., marimbula).
Mr. Ferrer's deep, precise voice, harmonized against his daughter Lena's soprano, works with the chiming lines of the tres; they are simple but lovely, importing small hints of Cubas's African past. Rustico'shows off a troubadourlike sensibility in pop songwriting. It is great craftsmanship and strikingly beautiful. NEW YORK TIMES, March 07, 2005
