- WOMEX 2009
Dan Sultan is an extraordinarily talented musician. His debut album, Homemade Biscuits, a collaboration with Scott Wilson, was released independently in 2007 to rave reviews. After recording their debut album Sultan and Wilson went on to form the big soul band they were after.
Sultan is a singer of immense quality and his sound can be best described as equal parts blues, soul, rock and country. The songs are permeated with a dry sense of humour and showcase a storyteller’s knack for transporting the audience into a world where the roads are dusty, the heart is lonely and the car stereo is forever tuned to the likes of Johnny Cash and Otis Redding.
Sultan’s career is about to explode thanks to collaborations, touring, festivals and an upcoming feature film, Bran Nue Dae, with a cast of stars including Geoffrey Rush, Missy Higgins and Jessica Mauboy. The much anticipated second album is due for release on November 6th 2009.
In the last few years, Sultan and his band have performed at nearly every major festival in Australia. Paul Kelly invited Sultan and Scott Wilson to contribute to the Kev Carmody tribute album Cannot Buy My Soul, as well as the concert of the same name at The Sydney Festival 2008 and at The Queensland Music Festival 2009.
Dan is also part of Black Arm Band a stunning Indigenous musical collaboration which includes the likes of Archie Roach, Jimmy Little and Shane Howard. Black Arm Band also teamed up with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing one of Dans songs. Black Arm Band have also performed in London twice.
