REPRESENTING Mozambican drummer, singer, composer and arranger DEODATO SIQUIR, and his band DEODATO SIQUIR & BALANÇO
(se review by Daniel Brown of his debut CD at mondomix.com)
I work for music because I love music. I believe music is an art that can reach further than any other expression, simply because it communicates directly to the feelings, and because endless amount of humans can be listening at the same time and get an individual experience. As beloved and missed Mr. Andy Palacio talked about, I also believe in "music with a higher purpose that goes beyond simple entertainment".
That of transmitting a culture, of preserving values of traditions,
and being a way of expressing all parts of humans history and pressent situation. It can be used as a bearer of messages and transmit feelings of inclusion, awareness, conciousnes or protest.
In Deodato´s case he uses small details; For instance by singing in Ronga, mixed with Portugese and English, when Ronga, while he was working as a teacher 10 years ago, was a forbidden language to teach in. He did teach in Ronga, as a protest, and for the reason to actually be able to teach the children, who only spoke this language at home.
He weaves in meaning in his texts, with refferences to the propaganda of his country, the starvation period, racism, identity and the present overwelming poverty and unemployment of 80% of the workable age, and to the general crises of the world.
I believe Deodato Siquir has a powerful soloist career ahead of him, his songs are to listen to again and again, and where ever he performs, he captures the public with a warm strength.
His music, singing and drumming is beautiful, cool, swinging, complex and intelligent. I think he is an extremely talented musician, and who ever plays with him, from Trios to Symphonic Orchestras, gets to be swinging. His style and musicality is contagious. And his teksts have those concious messages mentioned above.
You can see the tourplan for more information on upcomming concerts. We hope to be able to join a lot of festivals in 2008.
