Some think it is quite awkward... that Portugal... with such a lovely weather, such nice beaches, such beautiful women, such an amazing food and extraordinary wines, has such a melancholic and sad music like Fado... - That's because they haven't heard about Deolinda...
"...Her name is Deolinda and she is old enough to realize that life isnt as easy as it seems. Merrily unmarried, in love and out of love, born in Lisbon, she inhabits a ground floor apartment somewhere in the suburbs of the capital. She writes her own songs by peeking through the curtains of her window, drawing inspiration from the old gramophone records that once belonged to her grandmother and by the bizarre and strange life of her neighbours. She lives with 2 cats and a gold fish..."
Deolinda is a new and original concept of Portuguese popular music inspired by Fado and by the traditional roots of the Portuguese song. It first came to light in 2006, and although it hasn't a recorded album yet (their debut album is to be recorded this December) it already has captivated the Portuguese critic and their peers, performing live throughout the country and generating a mass phenomenon unheard of. The success of this group is due partly to having found a refreshing, original and rather amusing way of singing what Fado sings without the traditinal Portuguese guitar and through a fictionalized character named Deolinda. Their songs tell stories which are inhabited by the typical characters and scenery popularised by Fado in a contemporary and cosmopolitan Portugal.
