The roots of UTUA's songs are deep in the Finnish-Karelian-Ingrian folk tradition. Singer, Anna-Kaisa Liedes combines traditional verses with contemporary musical idioms, giving them a fresh and personal touch. Anna-Kaisa Liedes is one of Finland's more prominent and progressively-minded folk singers. Besides the Finno-Ugric song tradition, she specializes in vocal improvisation, exploring the human voice's possibilities. An ensemble complete the music with folk and jazz-tinged backgrounds. The Finnish national newspaper Helsingin Sanomat chose the Utua CD as one of their top CD releases of the year 2004.
