'...polished, vibrant and joyous' **** Songlines review Aug 2004.

Marsada's debut album Pulo Samosir is an uplifting musical gem. Recorded in a tiny studio in Medan, the capital of Sumatra, in 2003, it required very few takes, despite the cramped conditions. This was due to the quality of the 7 musicians but also was a clear example of the unity and understanding of this group who truly live up to their name Marsada, which means 'together'.

Pulo Samosir, the name of Marsada's island home, 'Samosir Island', is a comprehensive showcase of Marsada's Batak music - both the ceremonial instrumental pieces (uning-uningan) and Batak folk. Marsada's unique contemporary arrangements sensitively mix traditional instruments, such as the hasapi (2-stringed plucked lute), garantung (wooden xylophone), sulim (bamboo flute) and taganing (set of 5 pitched drums) with acoustic guitars, often overlaid with close harmony vocals. The result is an irresistible and accessible sound, high energy and vibrant yet at times deeply soothing and soulful. The last track: Baringin Saba Tonga even displays a fine example of Batak yodeling!
