WOMEX 13 Official Showcase Selection
If Lo Griyo represents the future of music from La Reunion, then the future looks bright indeed. Led by multi-instrumentalist Sami Pageaux Waro the son of maloya master Danyel Waro their explorations in acoustic-electronica are at the gateway between tradition and modernity, between the legacy of maloya, the musics of Madagascar, Mali and Morocco and the universal possibilities of sound manipulation technology. Waro utilizes his formidably dexterous abilities on percussion, kora, reeds and flutes alongside Luc Joly on saxophones, flutes, bass clarinet and percussion while sound designer Brice Nauroy captures samples, creates loops and sculpts new sounds, moulding an exhilarating blend of multi-layered intricacy and improvisation. Lo Griyo released their second album earlier this year and have been touring in Europe, Morocco and India. See the future. Bring sunglasses.
