Matthias Entrup (*1978) is a professional mallet player (vibraphone/chromatic balafon) and percussionist from Bremen, Germany. While his work and musical biography is characterized through a great bandwith of musical styles (ranging from drumset, classical orchestra percussion to world music and jazz) he's really feeling "at home" when it comes to improvising. After having produced an album with brazilian singer Cleo Fernandes including ten original songs he's now again focusing mallet instruments. On a trip to West Africa (Burkina Faso, december 2009) he got to know the burkinabé balafon manufacturer Youssouf Keita who produces - besides the traditional balafons such as pentatonic and diatonic - also chromatic balafons. The opportunity to have the sizzling, almost "speaking" balafon sound combined with full harmonic and melodic interoperability to "western" instruments (the balafon is tuned at 442Hz) is currently leading to new projects which will be published soon.
