Since the foundation of the band in 1989,
Urbalia Rurana has consolidated itself as one
of the most active and innovative groups of
Valencian folk music. Such a characteristic
has given them the chance to take part in
important contests devoted to folk music. The
music of Urbalia Rurana takes its source from
the tradition, combining the sounds of the
Pyrenees with those coming from La Marina,
Els Ports de Morella, the Balearic Isles...
Since 1977, Maurizio Martinotti has been
carrying out researches on the Piedmontese
instrumental and vocal repertoire, working
side by side with active traditional musicians
and singers. As a musician, he has
contributed to the rediscovery of the
hurdy-gurdy, an ancient and wonderful
traditional instrument.
The performance this ensemble offers to the
public is a mixture of Piedmontese and
Catalan music: Maurizio Martinotti and Urbalia
Rurana are linked since 1991 by friendship
and by common experiences. Now the time
has come when these lovers of their own
territories have decided to share their
repertoire, to prove to themselves and to the
public that such a long journey, covered
together or side by side, was well worth
taking.
