In a recent article on Lisbon's Afro-Portugese dance music scene, Dazed magazine described the city as 'home of the most futuristic and forward-thinking club music in the world'. It also rightly hailed DJ Marfox as the undisputed king of the scene, leading light of Lisbon kuduro, the dynamic and extremely hot sound, sourced from Angolan batida, kizomba and tarraxinha. It's the throbbing soundtrack of the sprawling high-rise barrios on the city's periphery, where Marfox was born and from where the whole thing started when, aged 16, Marfox and two friends formed a crew, DJs Do Guetto, and released a free zip that spread across the barrio borders. That was 2006 and the momentum led to the start of the Principe label and the downtown Noite Principe sessions, and the rest is history, in the making, now.
