121 companies of 24 nationalities will be in Manresa from 3rd to 6th November to present 263 performances and activities prepared by the roots factory of the Mediterrània. Taraf de Haïdouks from Rumania –‘The men outside the law” join forces with another banner of the Balkans, the Kocani Orkestar, the fanfare from Macedonia, and excel among other highly suggestive and innovative formations, such as Roger Mas with the Cobla Sant Jordi –one of the most prestigious and well-established cobla groups- or Quico El Célio, El Noi i El Mut de Ferreries & el ‘Botifarra’ with their new staging, “La Barraca”, a musical and experiential journey from the Delta de l’Ebre in Catalonia to La Costera in the Region of Valencia. The beautiful performance of “Habibi / Amado” –nominated for the Max Theatre Awards- or the applauded opening creation of this year’s Festival Grec of Barcelona, “La muntanya al teu voltant” by the Gelabert Azzopardi company, also make performing arts sparkle.
The Fira 2011 goes beyond Manresa and invites the public to share the “Sant Benet Experience”. Leaving the centre of the city by bus, we travel to the priceless setting of the Monastery of Sant Benet, where the L’albergueria company revisits the old story of the three Marias, renamed M3. The monumental heritage merges with the live performance, similar to the opening performance featuring Perejaume, the painter-poet from Sant Pol de Mar, and the invited artist of the Fira this year, who will make one of our most ancestral instruments –the bells- dialogue with the figure of such an important writer as Jacint Verdaguer, all within the central theme of this edition: the importance and the gravity of images.
The wonderful duo formed by Manel Camp and Llibert Fortuny, the Catalan variety performers from Betzuca, the interpretive precision of the tenor Jordi Molina, the exuberant voice of Apa from Valencia, the cosmopolitism of the Cobla Catalana dels Sons Essencials, the passionate flamenco of Las Migas, and the internationally renowned Ginesa Ortega, the meticulous Brossa Quartet de Corda, the new exquisite work by Feliu Ventura, the unorthodox Spanish musician Jabier Ruibal, the vibrating rhythms of El Gafla, the international circus companies D’Irque & Fien, and Nicole & Martin, or the photographic images of the Valls saga by Catalan photographers, are some of the events emerging from this factory of group efforts represented by the Fira Mediterrània of Manresa. On Friday night in the marquee, the virtuous uneasiness of Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino straight from the heel of the Italian boot –la Puglia- and Jewish sounds by Trivium Klezmer; the gypsy evening on Saturday in the same setting with Bashavav from Turkey and the Rumba Vella from Catalonia, or the final afternoon co-featuring Jennifer dels Catarres and the street show of the internationally renowned Xarxa Teatre, complete the roll of honour of the Fira 2011.
