Mambo Moto Moto (‘hot stuff’) is the title of this year’s country focus: Supported by the German Cultural Fund and its TURN project for German-African partnerships, we look at what is going on on the East coast of Africa. Central to the focus are four collaborations between musicians from Germany and Tanzania; to widen the view we have invited four more ensembles from Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.
The current economic development in Tanzania – a country that belongs to the top ten of the world’s emerging states – has led to a monopolisation of the music business leaning onto mainstream-oriented music. Mambo Moto Moto concentrates on independent (and traditional) musicians whose innovative ideas are making waves in Dar Es Salaam and other cities.
