Mohan Veena: The instrument consists of 20 strings and is held in the lap while playing. Mohan Veena is a highly ‘expressive’ instrument with the total strings pull to be in excess of 500 pounds. This rare instrument is played by very few people only and highly vibrant and melodious.
Poly Varghese is one of the most known Mohan Veena Players of India now. “His childhood was soaked in classical music and he felt that was the only thing he wanted to do in his life. He didn't want to grow up to sit in an office, so, joined the highly acclaimed music & performing arts center in Kerala, India – Kalamandalam. After school he learned the classical percussion instrument Mridangam and Kerala folk arts. After I completing his degree in Kalamandalam, went to one of the most acclaimed seats of art in India -Santiniketan, where he trained in Rabindra sangeet…..he also travelled with the nomadic Baul singers and learnt their songs. At that time, he began to play “Hindustani Classical music on the guitar.”
He travelled all over India, sometimes like a gypsy, with other musicians, met many great people belongs to diverse schools of music before he finally went to the state of Rajasthan and met his Guru (master) legendary Mohan Veena maestro Pandit Viswamohan Bhat and.played the guitar for him…..impressed, the Mohan Veena master agreed to take him on as his student. There he had been learning under him for over a decade.
For him, ‘music is a Mantra’ - he played the rare instrument in front of many stalwarts of classical music and several music enthusiasts in India and overseas.
Poly, the musician, invented a 40-string guitar a couple of years ago, says the three-neck Poly-String Guitar has 12 octaves but he is still not satisfied, “Any instrument has limitations, no matter how niche it is. Only the musician knows it. He kept modifying and experimenting with this guitar, apart from playing 19 other musical instruments,
